Content inspired by/taken from Matthew: 25 studies for individuals and groups
OPEN QUESTION: It seems that every other week, we hear about a scandal that has
happened in the media. In your opinion, how and why are the ideals of people
compromised over time?
QUESTION: The temptations we all face, day by day and at critical moments of decision… may
be very different from those of Jesus, but they have a similar goal. What does falling for the
temptation do to us and our relationship with God?
QUESTION: After falling into temptation, sometimes Christians look to the temptation itself and
only see the action without having a curiosity for why they made that decision. What happens if
we only focus on the action and we don’t have a curiosity for why we made a specific
decision?
Matthew 4:12-17
CULTURAL CONTEXT: Matthew’s gospel usually speaks of the “kingdom of heaven”; the other
Gospels normally use the phrase “kingdom of God.” Saying heaven instead of God was a
regular Jewish way of avoiding the word no God out of reverence and respect. Matthew was
therefore not talking about the place where God’s people go after their death. It meant, as
Jesus’ listeners at the time understood, God’s rule here on earth. How does this impact how
you read these verses?
Matthew 4:18-25
QUESTION:
QUESTION: Sometimes Jesus’ call comes slowly, starting like a faint whisper. Sometimes, he
calls people as suddenly and what seems as dramatically as he called Peter and Andrew,
James and John. How and what first drew you to Jesus?
QUESTION:
Sometimes, Christians focus on giving up everything… that you have to live in poverty or you
have to do something you hate to be truly holy. But what does it look like to give to God what
you have with where you’re at?
● What does it look like to give your classes to God?
● What does it look like to give your projects to God?
● What does it look like to give your sorority/fraternity/extra curricular clubs to God?
● What does it look like to give your friends and family to God?
● What does it look like to give your summer to God?
● What does it look like to give your time to God?
● What does it look like to give your passions to God?
● What does it look like to give your job to God?
QUESTION: What do we learn about God? What do we learn about Jesus? What do we
learn about the Holy Spirit?
What is good news to you in this chapter?
We’re going to see in the next chapters of how Jesus’ brings God’s rule here on earth.
