the backfilling and compaction as per specification and contract drawings.

REFERANCE STANDARDS:
 Site GFC drawings.
 Inspection test plan for backfilling
 Contract & tender documents.
 IS: 2720 Part: 8-Method of test for determination of moisture content dry relation
using heavy compaction.
 IS: 2720 Part2- Method of test for determination of moisture content.
 IS: 2720 Part29- Method of test for determination of Dry density of soil by the
core cutter method.

EQUIPMENTS:

METHOD OF STATEMENT

BACKFILLING PROCEDURE:

 After completion of the compaction under blinding, tie beams and ground slab.
Backfilling shall commence using similar excavated material. Care shall be taken to
remove bolder, vegetations and any other deleterious materials.
 But prior to backfilling, the compacted surface shall be accepted by the client.
 The thickness of the backfill shall not be greater than 300mm.
 The sub-grade once approved, the excavated materials or any material source
approved by the Engineer shall be placed in layers not more than 300 mm thick
followed by compaction test when the surface level is ready.
 In-situ dry density test ( compaction test ) shall be performed at the rate indicated in
the specification.
 The layers shall be compacted with mechanical means, wherever vibro hammer
cannot be put to use due to space constraint, hand ramming with crow bar shall be
done.
 Each layer of filling shall be levelled, watered at the optimum moisture content,
compacted and tested before the succeeding layer is placed. The level of compaction
required is 95% of Standard Proctor Density for all areas.
 Backfilling followed with compaction shall continue till the final level is achieved.
Records shall be kept for each layer by the QA/QC engineer.
 The final surface of the compacted filling material shall be dressed to required level or
slope if any.
 All the filled area shall be inspected for true top level as per approved drawing and to
the satisfaction of client/Inspection Authority.

DOCUMENTATION:
1. Checklist for backfilling of soil.
2. Site Drawing Level sheets.
3. Soil MDD reports.
4. Compaction test reports.
