Statistics of Globalization

The document discusses several key aspects of globalization and statistics related to global trade. It notes that 90% of world trade is carried out by the shipping industry, which allows countries to access raw materials. Shipping has the lowest environmental impact of transport methods. While physical goods trade has decreased in recent years, services trade has increased. Trade has also become more concentrated regionally rather than long distance. Current trends in globalization include shifts in production and labor markets, climate change impacts, and rapid technological advances, according to the UN.

Statistics of Globalization

1. Why is the shipping industry so important/crucial for globalization?

What impact does it have (economic, ecological, etc.)?
For starters, 90% of the world trade is carried out by the shipping industry. For
instance, shipping allows countries to access the raw materials they need to expand
their economies. Shipping has the huge benefit that it has the lowest environmental
footprint in the transport segment on a per-ton basis. 11 billion tons of goods are
transported by ship each year, this represents 1.5 tons per person based on the
current global population. For an economic region such as the European Union,
shipping accounts for 80% of total exports and imports by volume, and some 50% by
value.
As of 2019, the total value of the annual world shipping trade had reached more than
14 trillion US Dollars.

2. How is global trade changing? What is being traded and where?

The trade of physical goods has lowered significantly through the years 2007 -
2017. We often think of physical goods trade when thinking of trade but services are
also a part of this. services have increased compared to goods trade. people used
to trade to get cheaper prices however this has been lower in percentage
throughout the year. trades have become more concentrated in some regions
instead of sending the goods a long way. The countries that are the most active on
these trades are: Germany, France, United States, China and japan. An example of
what is being traded and where is germany. Germany exported about 16.8 billion
euros worth of cars to China in the year 2014. That's about 11% of its yearly
produce.

3. Describe the current tendency of globalization using statistical

information you may find online.
There are three mega-trends related to globalization that the United Nations has
found starting with shifts in production and labor markets, climate change, and
rapid advances in technology. Trends aren't very likely to end globalization however
some would argue that globalization can be reversed at least partially. The current
trends of globalization are a mix of how technology is changing, how the economy
is changing, how the environment is changing, and how social views are changing.
Even though globalization's basic ideas are still the same, these trends are changing
how it is lived, handled, and judged in the modern world. It is important to keep an
eye on these trends and change tactics to make sure that globalization continues to
be a force for good change even as its problems are dealt with.
