Write'n'wipe Cards: Cookie Trays

This document provides instructions for a multiplication game called "Cookie Trays" that uses arrays to teach students how to determine the total of equal groups. The game uses cards with dot patterns representing cookies in trays arranged in arrays. Students describe the array on their card and write the total number of cookies. The purpose is for students to practice using arrays to solve multiplication problems and engage in repetitive practice to build skills.

Using this file

Learning to multiply requires a good deal of repetition – playing games is a good way to make
this repetition fun and motivating!

This game will assist students to become familiar with using equal groups in an array format to
find totals in multiplication problems.

Demonstrate to the students how to ‘read’ an array and find the total.

Before students play the game, introduce the game pieces and look at them together. Help them
to become familiar with the format and rules of the game.

Show the students the cards. Encourage them, if they have difficulty and reassure them that help
will be provided during the game.

Try to make learning experiences and game playing as fun as possible. The aim of the game is
not to demand or test the students’ knowledge, but rather to encourage and assist them in playing
the game. Remember that the more fun a student has the more times they will want to play –
thereby engaging in the repetition needed to build solid and meaningful understanding and skills.

Playing games will not only help your students’ mathematical skills but will assist them learning to
co-operate, concentrate, follow rules, engage with other people and perhaps more importantly
win and lose.

Game Instructions: Cookie Trays
Equipment
Cards
Dry Erase Markers
Optional recording worksheet

Purpose

Students will use arrays to determine the total of equal groups.

How to play:

Teacher laminates the cards before use.

This game is for an individual student or a small group of players.

Players take a card. They describe the groups of dots on the cookie tray, e.g. it has
two rows of three cookies. Each student listens to the others describe their card.

The player then uses a marker to record how many cookies in total, in the number
sentence at the bottom of the card.

The teacher may request the students to then consolidate their learning by reading
the complete multiplication problem and answer e.g. 2 times 3 equals 6.

The teacher may also ask students to use concrete materials (such as counters) to
model the problem again.
