DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. General
A. The QB0267 Engine Air Particle Separator, hereafter known as EAPS, is designed to
protect the engines of the Puma helicopter from airborne contaminant.
2. Description
A. The EAPS consists of a frame as shown in Figure 1. Enclosing the frame is an inlet plate
and an outlet plate. The plates have a series of matching perforations each of which
contain an inertial air cleaner.
B. Beneath the cover plates and facing aft are seven ejectors and bleed air nozzle
assemblies. Each nozzle is supplied with bleed air from the engine compressor.
3. Operation
A. Air drawn into the engine intake passes through the inertial air cleaners fitted to the EAPS
(see Figure 2 and Figure 3). Vortex generators input a swirling motion on the passing air
causing the particulate in the air to be thrown to the outside of the body by centrifugal
force. The clean air portion of air passing through the outlet tube to the engine. The
particulate passes through the annular gap between the body and outlet tube into the
space between the inlet and outlet tube plates.
B. The high-pressure bleed air to the nozzles sets up suction in the ejectors causing the
particulate to be sucked from the frame and expelled overboard.
4. Leading Particulars

CLEANING
1. General
WARNING: WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR FOR DRYING PURPOSES ENSURE THAT
THE AIR JET IS NOT DIRECTED TOWARDS THE SKIN. IN THE EVENT OF
COMPRESSED AIR BEING DIRECTED AT THE SKIN, OBTAIN MEDICAL ADVICE
IMMEDIATELY.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR ON OUTER SURFACE OF THE EAPS AS ANY
DEBRIS MAY BE WEDGED MORE TIGHTLY INTO THE SEPARATOR TUBE.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE SOLVENTS, OTHER THAN THOSE STATED TO CLEAN THE EAPS
OR COMPONENTS. SOLVENTS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO VORTEX
TUBES AND SEALS.
