The American Psychological Association defines Sexual Deviant
Behavior as any sexual behavior that is regarded as significantly
different from the standards established by a culture or subculture.
There are a lot of sexual deviant behaviors but sexual violence has
always been the concern here in the Philippines. According to a study
conducted by the Council for the Welfare of Children in partnership
with UNICEF about 17.1 percent of children 13-<18 years experienced
any form of sexual violence while growing up. More males claimed to
have such experiences.

1. Sexual Harassment
● Sexual Harassment is the sexual abuse of a person
(whether a child or adult) to another person for sexual
pleasure or profit. It occurs when an individual sees
another person as a sexual object and uses this idea to
satisfy his/her sexual urges and fantasies, usually by
subjecting their victim to unwanted or improper sexual
advances or activity.
● The Manila Bulletin wrote an article about the PNP’s

alleged sex-for-pass scheme against sex workers at
quarantine points. The allegations of sexual
harassment against sex workers at quarantine points
caught the attention of Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa
of the PNP and ordered the immediate investigation.
According to him, there were no complaints received
but later on one woman claimed in a news report that
she was abused by a policeman who used to be her
customer in exchange for passage to the QCP.

2. Rape
● Rape is forced sexual intercourse, including vaginal,
anal, or oral penetration. Penetration may be by a body
part or an object.
● The sexual act may also be considered rape if it
satisfies any of the following criteria:
- One or both people are not old enough to
consent, which means one or both of them are
below 18 years old.
- One of them does not have the capacity to
consent, which means one of the them may not
be in his/her right mental and legal capacity to
consent (i.e. with mental disability, people
who have been drugged or unconscious, etc.
- One of them did not agree to take part, which
means the rapist might use physical force or
threat to force the victim to have an
intercourse with him/her.
● If these three considerations are met, the sexual act
falls under the category of rape, which is a criminal
offense and it is punishable by law.
● An article from Philippine Star Global written by
Emmanuel Tupas (2020, May 25), claimed that “an
average of eight people a day have fallen victim to
sexual assault in the country during the community
quarantine. Data from the Philippine National Police
(PNP) showed that 602 people across the country were
raped from March 17 to May 23 or an average of eight
people daily (Headlines Section).”

Prevention of Sexual Violence

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests strategies to


prevent sexual violence. Here are the strategies to prevent sexual
violence:

2. Image-Based Abuse
● The E-Safety Commissioner defines image-based
abuse as sharing or threatening to share a nude image
or video of people even if they don’t want them to
(Young people Section).
● One type of image-based abuse according to the E-
Safety Commissioner is the sextortion. Sextortion is
threatening a person to share and demanding them to
share more nudes and money in return of a favor
(Young people Section).
● Sextortion is a form of a blackmail.

Prevention of Image-Based Abuse
The E-Safety Commissioner suggests strategies or actions to
take when being harassed using image-based abuse:
1. Ask them to stop. Let them know that their behavior
and actions are inappropriate and makes you
uncomfortable.
2. Send something else. Resistance skill is a must and a
firm attitude about saying no to their behavior and act
is necessary. Send them memes instead!
3. Report and block. If decent communication doesn’t
work, take screenshots of the requests, report the
person to the social media service app, and block
them.
4. Get support. Talk to your parents and trusted
guardians about it and get guidance from them.

Factors that Affect One’s Attitude and Practices Related to


Sexuality and Sexual Behaviors
According to Greenberg, Bruess and Oswalt (2017) in their book
Exploring The Dimensions of Human Sexuality, there are different
factors that affect one’s attitudes and practices related to sexuality and
sexual behaviors. Here are the factors:
Religion. More often than not, religion is usually associated with
different spiritual and moral values. Like how this affects a person’s
decision when it comes to morality, sexual behavior, premarital sexual
behavior, adultery, divorce, contraception, and abortion.
Multiculturalism. Just like how culture varies from one place to
another, the views of other people about sexuality differs from one
country to another as well. The ethnicity of an individual can be
decided by birth, birthplace, inherent language, race and religion. For
some countries abortion is legal but here in the Philippines it’s illegal.
Socioeconomic. Social status and education also play a big role in the
attitudes and behaviors. People below the poverty line statistically have
less access to proper medical care, contraception, and care for
pregnancy, childcare and having a certain sexual role model.
Ethics. This involves the treatment of ourselves and other people.
Some of the ethical questions include:
● Is having sex bad or not?
● Is it okay to tell my partner my sexual history before our
marriage?
● Is adultery and concubinage ethical?
● Does using power to get sexual partners ethical?
● Is it a sin to have a same sex relationship?
Media. Media has always been very influential in molding the point of
view of people when it comes to gender roles, sexual behaviors, and
sexuality. But do they really portray reality? Decide on a medium that
helps you improve your sexual health by selecting precise information
and the one that depicts realistic point of view.
Politics. Policies the public make greatly influence our sexual
behaviors. An example would be the R.A. 10354 or commonly known
as the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012,

which recognizes human rights and guarantees equality and non-
discrimination, the right to reproductive health, the freedom to make
decisions in conformity with religion, ethics, culture, and responsible
parenthood. Another example is the R.A. 9262 commonly known as
the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004,
which values the human rights and dignity of women and children.
This protects them from violence and threats to their security and
personal safety.

during a Pandemic and create an infographics raising awareness about
the chosen topic. Use the following guide questions:
● What is your topic all about?
● What are the causes and effects of this?
● How to prevent this act from happening?
● Which factor affecting attitudes and practices related to
sexuality greatly influences this act?

The pandemic has brought a lot of changes to the lives of people. Some
changes are good but some might pose dangers. The new normal
almost requires the use of the internet. We all know that the internet is
helpful in so many ways but it can also give problems and dangers if
not used properly. One of the dangers of the internet is the possible
exposure of people to pornography that could lead to the development
of different deviant sexual behaviors. Some of the deviant sexual
behaviors that can be developed even in times like these are: Sexual
Harassment, Rape, and Image-based Abuse. The internet isn’t the only
one to blame for the development of these deviant sexual behaviors.
There are a lot of factors that affect people’s attitudes and practices
related to sexuality, and sexual behaviors, these are: Religion,
Multiculturalism, Socioeconomic, Ethics, Media, and of course the
Politics. There are a lot of reasons why people develop these behaviors
that is why it is necessary for you to know and understand these
concepts to help you be aware of your own sexual behaviors.
