QUESTION 1 [20 Marks]
a) What is the cross product of the two vectors A and B? [3 marks]
b) The force 𝐅 = {6𝐢 + 8𝐣 + 10𝐤} N creates a moment about point O of 𝐌𝟎 =
{−14𝐢 + 8𝐣 + 2𝐤} N. m. Note that the diagram shows 𝐅 and 𝐌𝟎 in an arbitrary position.

i. If the force passes through a point P having an x coordinate of 1 m, determine the y and z
coordinates of the point P. [6 marks]
ii. Determine the perpendicular distance d from point O. [5 marks]

iii. Point A and B are located 3 the y component of point P and 3 the z component of point P
respectively. Find the moment caused by the force F about line BA. [6 marks]

QUESTION 2 [20 Marks]

a) What is the difference(s) between a frame and a truss? [3 marks]
b) What is the difference between a frame and a Machine? [3 marks]
c) A tower crane shown in the figure is rigidly attached to the building at F. A cable is attached
at D and passes over the small frictionless pulleys at A and E. The object suspended from C
weighs 1500 N.

QUESTION 4 [20 Marks]

a) For the following, answer True or False. [4 marks]
i. Negative internal moment in the simply supported beam tends to sag the beam.
ii. When a potion of a beam is loaded by a triangular distributed load, the shear force in that
potion is governed by a quadratic equation.
iii. Shear force in the beam is an internal force directed along the length of the beam.
