The document provides a lesson plan for teaching students about writing rules for sequences. It includes objectives, procedures for teaching concepts like skip counting and pattern recognition through examples and activities. Students will practice identifying patterns and writing rules to find missing terms in sequences. The lesson aims to help students understand how to formulate rules to describe patterns and continue numeric and non-numeric sequences.

EXPLICIT TEACHING TEACHER RODALYN R. CERDINIO LEARNING AREA MATHEMATICS

DATE FEBRUARY 17, 2023 QUARTER 3rd

I-A. Content Standards: Demonstrates understanding of sequence in forming rules, expressions, and equations.

Able to apply knowledge of sequence, expressions, and equations in mathematical

B. Performance Standards:
problems and real-life situations.

Formulates the rule in finding the nth term using different strategies (looking for a
C. Objectives pattern, guessing and checking, working backwards)
e.g. 4,7,13,16,...n - M6AL-IIId.7

III. Procedure
A. Preparation
1. Recall/Review
We discussed how to differentiates Solid figures from plane figure.

Solid Figures are three dimensional 3D figures that have length, width, and height.
Ex. Cube, cone, cylinder, pyramid, sphere and prism.
Plane Figures are flat two-dimensional 2D shapes. A plane figure can be made of straight lines, curved lines,
or both.
2. Drill
Name the following Figures.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

3. Motivation
a. Game “Passing the Ball.”
Say, “Let us have skip counting by 2’s from 2 to 20. Then, pass the ball at one pupil to start. The pupil who
started will pass the ball to another pupil to continue and so on and so forth until you reach 20. Every
pupil should listen to the previous answer to be able to give his/her own answer. The same procedure will
be done to the following items. See to it that every pupil in class will recite.

a. Skip count by 3 from 3 to 30.

b. Skip count by 5 from 5 to 50.
c. Skip count by 9 from 9 to 90.
Did you enjoy the activity? How are you able to follow the sequence of our skip counting? Emphasize the
value of alertness.
B. Presentation
A. I DO STAGE
Present the Lesson - Writing Rules for Sequences
Numbers are not only used for counting or measuring. It is also used to identify order and sequences. We use
numbers in our everyday life. Numbers indeed, play an important role in setting and organizing our routine for the
day. We follow a certain pattern and doing so makes things predictable to us. In this lesson, we will learn on how
to find the rule for the nth term of a sequence or pattern.

Sequence – is a set of numbers written in a special order by the application of a definite rule. Each number in the
sequence is called a TERM. Patterns and rules will help us to continue a given sequence of numbers, figures or to
fill in the missing numbers or symbol.

Incorporate video content to enhance comprehension of the lesson.

B. GUIDED PRACTICE (We Do Stage)
This time let’s have another activity.
Directions: Supply the next three letters, figures, symbols, or combination of numbers and letters in the
following patterns.
Answer:
1. A, C, E, G, I, ____, ____, ____ 1. A, C, E, G, I, _K, _M_, _O_
2. z, y, x, w, v, ____, ____, ____ 2. z, y, x, w, v, __u_, _t_, _s__
3. -2, -4, -6, _____, _____, ____ 3. -2, -4, -6, _-8__, __-10__, __-12__
4. 2a, 3b, 4c, _____, _____, ___ 4. 2a, 3b, 4c, __5d__, __6e__, __7f_
5. 3, 9, 27, _____, _____, _____ 5. 3, 9, 27, __81__, __243__, __729__

C. INDEPENDED PRACTICE (You Do Stage)

a. Independent Practice

Children will be working with their groupmates independently. Differentiated activities were provided to them
to focusing on the lesson. Each group will present their output to the class and be checked.
GROUP 1 GROUP 2

GROUP 3 GROUP 4

Find the missing terms and write the rules.

1. 5, 10, 15, 20, _____, ______, _______.

2. 3, 5, 7, 9, _______, _______, _______.
3. -2, -4, -6, -8, _______, _______, ______.
4. 20, 16, 12, 8, ______, _______, _______.
1 1 1 1
5. , , , , _______, ________, ________.
2 3 4 5

D. GENERALIZATION
Lead the pupils to give the following generalization by asking:

1. How do we find/formulate the rules in finding the next term in a sequence?

Answer: Determine the order of numbers if it is ascending or descending.
Find the difference between the consecutive terms.
To find the rule of the next term, use the difference between terms.

IV. EVALUATION
Directions: Find the rule, then, write the missing terms.

1. 12, 17, 22, ________, 32, ________

2. _______, _________, 67, 70, 73
3. 3, _______, 9, 15, 18, ________
4. 78, 70, 62, _______, ________
5. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, _______, _______

V. ASSIGNMENT
Formulate 5 rule or pattern of your own. Write one number sequence for each rule.
