Algebra

This document covers various algebra 1 concepts including: - Forming mathematical expressions from word problems involving multiple variables - Grouping like terms and simplifying algebraic expressions - Substitution into formulas to solve word problems involving prices, volumes, etc. - Expanding brackets in algebraic expressions - Isolating the subject of a formula by performing inverse operations like cross-multiplying and combining like terms - Solving different types of one-step equations including some involving fractions or brackets The document provides examples and practice problems for students to work through for each of these core algebra 1 skills.

Algebra 1 – Linear Equations and expressions

(a) GROUPING LIKE TERMS AND FORMING EXPRESSIONS

Example: A woman is carrying two shopping bags. In the first shopping bag, she has 2
bottles of water, 1 orange and 3 cartons of milk. In the second shopping bag, she has
5 bottles of water and 2 oranges. Form a mathematical expression with this
information.

Example: A fisherman goes on a 3-day fishing trip. On the first day he catches 2 sea
breams and a sea bass. On the second day he catches a sea bream and 4 cod. On the
last day he catches a sea bass and 1 salmon. With this information, form a
mathematical expression for the fisherman’s fishing trip.

Simplify the following by grouping like terms:

1) 7m + r – 3m +2r

2) 6x2 – 4 + 3x - 2x + y

3) 2x + 12 – 12

(b) SUBSTITUTION
MENU
1)
Margherita - €6

Al Tonno - €7.50

Capricciosa - €7.50

Pepperoni - €7

The Menu above shows the prices for a pizza restaurant. A family orders a
Margherita, 2 Al Tonno and 3 Pepperoni. What was the total price thay had to pay?

2) A cylinder has radius 3cm and is 6cm tall. Using the equation , find its
volume.

(c) EXPANDING BRACKETS

3 ( a + 4b )
3a + 12b

(d) SUBJECT OF THE FORMULA

IMPORTANT:
- When the variable you want as subject is inside the brackets, first expand the
brackets.
- We can only cross-multiply, when on both sides, all terms have a common
denominator.
- When we have two seperate fractions on the same side of the equation, it is
usually necessary to bring them with a common denominator.
- When the letter appears more than once in the equation, all the terms
containing the letter are taken on the same side.

- Make a the subject of the formula:

1) h = 25 + 9a

2) m = 3z – 5ap – 2y

3
3) 6 – abc = d

4) p + 3(a+4)

5) p = 2a(b+c)

6)

7)

10)

11) ab + 3 = a

12)

(e) SOLVING EQUATIONS
1) x +2 = 8

2) 3y + 7 = 25

3)

4) 5x – 6 = 2x

5) 2(9y+4) = 3y – 5
