will be informed of whether they are in the group in favor or against just on the very same day of
the debate, not before.
- Read the Official Rubric carefully to get a clear idea of the production and competences that are
expected from the students.
- Task is expected to be presented on a fixed date (see Calendar of Additional Evaluated Activities in
Paideia Idiomas). Therefore, the activity is not subject to re-scheduling. Students who do not
participate in the activity on the set date will get a 0.
Very Important Information! Bear in mind that according to IC Policies, It is mandatory to check the
CALENDAR OF ADDITIONAL EVALUATED ACTIVITIES FOR ADVANCED COURSES (Paideia – Idiomas)
since these activities start at the exact starting time of your class Schedule. If you connect late to
the “Debate” and the activity has already started, or you are absent, there is no possibility to
reprogram or reschedule it. Your grade for this missing activity will be “0” (zero).
- Depending on the number of the students, the class will be randomly divided into two groups: if
the group has up to 12 students, half will be assigned to present arguments in favor, the other half
will be in charge of arguments against the topic. If your group is larger than (12) twelve students,
half will be working with one topic; the other half with the second one. Nevertheless, each group
has to be subdivided into two groups the ones in favor and the ones against the topic.
- Send each group to Breakout Rooms of Zoom to prepare and organize their ideas. A few minutes
will be given to organize their task, no more than 15 to 20 minutes.
- The group topic order will be assigned randomly. If there are two topic groups, while the first topic
group debates, the other group will play the role of “audience” taking notes to be able to make a
solid remark based on the group’s performance. Students cannot rehearse while the other group is
debating.
- The teacher will act as moderator and time keeper. Each student’s participation will take around
25 to 30 seconds. A second round for rebuttals and counterarguments will then take place. Students
need to use their cameras when it is their turn only. When it’s not, their cameras and microphones
should be off. Teacher will call each student to participate. SS need to pay close attention to be
ready when they are called.
- At the end of the debate, some students in the audience may be called out to ask questions and
to contribute their own thoughts and opinions on the arguments presented.
Overall Expected Timing of the Activity: No more than 30 minutes per group topic – Up to 60
minutes for the debate itself.
