1. Christmas celebrations happen over one or two days in most places, but in Mexico, they last for weeks.
The festivities there begin on December 16, and for the eight evenings leading up to Christmas Eve, children
enjoy piñata parties. A piñata is a large, colorful figure made of paper or clay. It’s hung from a ceiling and filled
with candy and other small gifts. To get the gifts inside, children must break open the piñata by hitting it with a
big stick.
On Christmas Day, families go to church and later sit down for a huge feast. Then, the next major event is
Three Kings’ Day. On January 5, Mexicans honor the Three Kings who brought gifts to Jesus after his birth.
One traditional food served on this day is a sweet bread called Rosca de Reyes. It is baked with dried fruit in a
wreath* shape, and a small figure of baby Jesus is hidden inside. According to tradition, whoever gets the piece
of bread with the figure must host the party for the next festival, which is Candlemas Day. This festival takes
place on February 2 and is also related to Jesus’s birth. The fun really goes on for weeks in Mexico.

2. On the days leading up to the Day of the Dead, people traditionally clean their homes and then set up a
special table called ofrenda, which is used to honor a family member who is no longer alive. Usually, a photo of
the deceased family member is placed on this table along with flowers, candles, and food and drinks that he or
she enjoyed while he or she was alive. Other items like books, clothes, and music CDs can also be included.
The point of placing all of these things on the ofrenda is to make the late family member feel welcome during
their short visit home.
According to tradition, each ofrenda should include the four elements—water, wind, earth, and fire. Bread
represents earth, and paper decorations represent the wind, so both of these items are placed on the ofrenda. Lit
candles and bottles of water are also displayed to represent fire and water respectively. Putting together an
ofrenda is an act of love, and if the dead family member returns and sees the ofrenda, there’s no doubt they’ll
feel welcome.

3. The Day of the Dead is observed throughout Latin America, and the celebrations are similar from country
to country. But the people of Guatemala* have a special tradition that seems to exist nowhere else: kite flying.
When this tradition began many centuries ago, people used the kites as a way to communicate with dead loved
ones.
Unlike ordinary kites, the ones at Guatemala’s kite festivals are huge and truly impressive to look at.
They’re typically made with paper or cloth of many colors and patterns, and most of them are in the form of
circles. Some kites can be over twelve meters in size, with long tails flowing in the wind. It’s not unusual for
locals to spend weeks or months designing and building their kites.
While kite festivals are found throughout Guatemala, the biggest ones happen in two particular towns:
Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. During the festivals, the streets are filled with stands that sell delicious
local foods and handmade crafts*. You can even buy your own small kite to fly. However, the real action takes
place in the cemeteries, where people visit their deceased loved ones and go to display and fly their kites. Just
imagine giant, colorful kites filling the air. What an amazing sight!
