FINANCIAL LITERACY & ECONOMICS SY 23-24

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
 This Economics course provides students with a base foundation in the field of economics. The
course has five units. The units are fundamental concepts, microeconomics, macroeconomics,
international economics, and personal finance. In each area, students are introduced to major
concepts and themes concerning that aspect of economics. The goal of this course is for students to
obtain a strong understanding of economic systems and concepts and how those systems and
concepts affect their daily lives. This course is required for graduation.

TEXTBOOK:
 There is one required textbook for this course: HMH Economics: Principles and Practices. The
textbook is available online through Class Link (Launchpad). Click the HMH Ed Icon, select the
Discover tab, then Select a Program, and choose Economics.
 If you would like a physical textbook, you must check one out through Mary Franchak or the
Media Center. The cost for a lost or damaged textbook is $84.45.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expected to:
 Be on time (in the classroom BEFORE the Tardy bell begins to ring), seated and ready to
begin class.
 Remain focused on and engaged in Economics tasks through the end of the class period.
 *TARDY* (1st offense: Warning, 2nd offense: Teacher detention & an email or call home, 3rd, and
all subsequent offenses: Referral for EACH & an email or call home).
 Attend class prepared with the necessary materials (charged laptop, laptop charger, lined loose
leaf paper, pencils, and blue/black ink pens).
 Participate in class activities (by actively participating in any group activities, contributing to
class discussions, fully engaging in ALL independent work, and either taking notes OR reviewing
the provided notes, during teacher lectures).
 Conduct yourself in a positive, respectful manner while in class.
 Complete ALL academic tasks by the Due Date. Assigned academic tasks and assessments
are not optional, as they are an integral part of your participation in Economics, a course
required for graduation.

CELLPHONE POLICY:
 **NO CELL PHONES** should NOT be out nor in use (on your desk, on your physical
person) during class, unless instructed by the teacher. Prior to the ringing of the Tardy Bell, cell
phones should be silenced or turned off, then placed inside a backpack, or purse and placed on the
floor or underneath your seat. When and IF requested by the Teacher, at the start of class or during
class, your cell phone will be required to be placed in the cell phone pocket holder.
 If it is determined that you are using your cell phone during class, you will be asked to place
your cell phone in the cell phone holder. It may be retrieved at the end or after class, and an email
will be sent to your parent or guardian, informing them of your cellphone use.
 If you decline to place your cell phone in the cell phone pocket holder, an Administrator will be
contacted who will hold your phone to the end of the day and your parent or guardian will be
contacted to pick it up.

IN CASE OF REMOTE DAYS:


Technology Norms and Expectations
1. Be on time and be prepared.
2. Device charged.
3. Microphone Off.
4. Dress Appropriately.
5. Appropriate Background image.
6. Chat box is used for questions only.
7. Use the Raise hand button.
8. Report Technology problems.
9. Be respectful of the Teacher and of one each other.

SOME URL SUGGESTIONS:


 Find “your spot” to conduct remote learning.
 Camera at eye level.
 Locate your microphone.
 Log off, shut down, and turn your laptop off at the end of the day.
 Plan B (Download Teams app to phone).
 Pen and paper ready just in case.

Note: The chapters listed above are for reference only. During the course, additional Chapters may be utilized,
and information in some Chapters may be utilized more than once during the semester.

GRADING POLICY:
Numerical grades are earned according to the Fulton County School System grading scale as follows:
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70% - 79%
F = 69% and below

CATEGORY % OF GRADE
Major:
 A test, project, or essay will be given after each unit of study. These unit
assessments will cover all material in the unit, as well as some material from prior 55%
tests. In addition to multiple choice questions, tests may include graphs, diagrams,
short answers, or essays. Projects are also included in this grading category.
Minor:
 Assessments on standards within a unit. There will be announced and 35%
unannounced quizzes throughout the semester.
Practice:
 This category includes classwork, homework, as well as other practice 10%
assessments.

***THERE WILL BE NO FINAL EXAM, HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE A REQUIRED GRADED MINOR GIVEN
DURING FINALS WEEK. IF ANY STUDENT IS EXEMPTED, HE/SHE WILL BE NOTIFIED. ***

COURSE POLICIES:

PRACTICE
All practice including daily assignments, observations and/or engagement activities given in class or for
homework will be designed to provide relevant, standards-based activities that align with the course scope and
sequence. Homework assignments will be announced during class and must be accessible to students and
parents no later than 4:00 pm on the day of assignment for digitally accessible work.

MISSING AND LATE WORK:

Late work will be penalized 15% immediately upon being late, missing the assigned original Due Date. If
late work is not submitted before the end of the last day of the current unit, the deduction will then be an
automatic penalization of 25%, BEFORE grading of the late assignment begins. If late work is not submitted
within 10 days of the original Due Date (regardless of the last day of the current unit), it will not be accepted,
and will then become a permanent grade of “0” and will no longer be eligible for submission.
If students are absent, they will receive the same number of days they were absent to complete the assignment
without penalty. It is the student’s responsibility to request what he/she missed during their absence. Students
submitting work late due to an absence are required to write the dates of their absence at the top of their work
and must send an email to the teacher referencing the submitted late work.

RECOVERY:
Students are responsible for requesting Recovery via email and or in person with the Teacher. ALL students
will have one (1) opportunity to recover all major assessments if they score below 75%. Recovery must be
completed within 10 days of the original assessment or prior to the next major assessment, whichever
comes first. Students are eligible to earn a replacement grade on a recovery assessment that is no higher than or
up to 75%. RISE is available to support students, by confirmed email appointment, on Monday’s, before or after
school.

RISE:
Mondays: Mornings or Afternoons, by confirmed appointment, no later than Thursday, 3:30pm of the preceding
week. Please schedule with me via email and face to face.

 Personal communication: I am most easily reached via email,
veniseegardm@fultonschools.org, to discuss any questions or concerns students, or
parents/guardians may have. Please allow 24-48 school hours for an email response. I appreciate the
opportunity to address concerns and will access emails when we are on campus during regularly
scheduled school hours, otherwise upon our return to campus. Please understand that I cannot
accommodate unscheduled visits with a parent or guardian.

 Infinite Campus: Fulton County Schools uses Infinite Campus as the learning management
portal, which allows students and parents to view the student’s academic progress and attendance
online. You may visit www.fultonschools.org/infinitecampus for more detailed information,
including instructions for creating an account and logging in. As stakeholders in their own success, I
always encourage students, and their parents, to please frequently monitor attendance and academic
progress or lack thereof.

This course is required for graduation.

Email is the optimal form of communication. Emails sent during normal business hours will be responded to within 24-48 hours.
Emails sent outside of normal school hours (evenings/weekends/holidays) will be accessed and responded to within 24-48 hours upon
our return to the school campus.

Parents: Please ask your students what they are learning in class, if they can teach you what they’ve learned, they are most likely on
track for success on the Unit Quizzes/Tests. Please frequently monitor your student’s attendance and grades in Infinite Campus.

procedures contained therein.
