LIP FILLER AFTER-CARE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Expect some redness, small pin prick marks, and minor bruising. Avoid touching the area for 6 hours after the treatment.
2. Stay Hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is particularly vital after dermal filler treatment, as these injectables work by attracting
water molecules, thereby amplifying their volumizing effect. Avoid excessive salt for 24 hours as this can dehydrate.
3. Don’t drink through a straw for the first 24 hours as this puts pressure on the lips.
4. Don’t drink alcohol for at least 24 hours after you have had fillers and don’t smoke (cigarettes, vaping or shisha).
5. On the first day stick to foods that are easy to eat and chew, this means you’re less likely to have to wipe your lips and disturb
the injection site. Avoid eating foods that are too hot or too cold. Stick to eating moderately temperate food.
6. Avoid kissing or massaging your lips directly after the procedure and possibly for up to 48 hours.
7. Be gentle with your skin while washing for 24 hours. Don’t use and exfoliating agent for 24 hours or any harsh cleaning brush
8. Avoid excessive or heavy exercise and high temperatures like steam rooms, saunas, etc. for at least 48 hours after treatment.
9. You can apply ice pack or an ice cube covered in a thin cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain) 5-10 minutes every 2
hours. This will help ease swelling, itching, bruising, and any other pain.
10. Try to sleep on your back, face up and slightly elevated. Do not sleep on your face.
11. You can use Tylenol or Panadol (paracetamol = acetaminophen) for discomfort. No NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin) for 24 hours as
they can increase bleeding.
12. It is recommended to wait at least a week after your treatment before flying. This is because the air pressure in a plane can
make swelling and bruising worse.
13. Wait two weeks after lip filler to have any dentist visit and dental work done to avoid trauma and infection.
14. Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen or aspirin) or supplements (St Johns Wart, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, B or E) for
2 days before and after treatment, as these can increase your risk of bruising.
a. When To Contact Your Doctor:
b. Intense bruising or swelling: If you experience intense bruising or swelling for more than a week, check in with your doctor. It’s
rare, but allergies and reactions are possible.
c. Vascular occlusion: Vascular occlusion happens when the filler is injected into or around an artery, which reduces or stops the
blood flow. The surrounding skin and tissue will start to die without adequate blood supply.
Signs of vascular occlusion include immediate, severe pain and a change in skin color, which can look like white spots or
blotches.
It’s also important to note that the pain could take a while to become noticeable because most fillers include lidocaine, which is
an anesthetic. It can take several hours to wear off after the injection procedure.
d. Lumps: Lumps caused by the most common type of lip filler, hyaluronic acid, can be dissolved with a medication called
hyaluronidase. But many lumps from this filler will simply improve with massage and time.
e. Cold sores: Dermal fillers can trigger an outbreak cold sores or herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), which may require antiviral
treatment.
