Product Performance All data ¡eported in this section is Rpical data obtained on EC-3917 primed aluminum
surfaces. Prior to priming, the metal was etched as described in the surface preparation
section ofthis data sheet. Where noted, the etch was followed by chromic acid
anodization. After primer application a¡d dry, the bonds we¡e assembled and cu¡ed
for 60 minutes at 350'F (177'C) (250"F [12]'C] for the 3MrM Scotch-WeldrM Film
Adhesive AF 126 se¡ies and AI 163-2 series). A 4-5'F/minute (2.2-2.8'C/minute) rise
rate to tempe¡ature and 45-50 psi (3.1-3.4 bar) pressure was used. Parts were cooled
to betow 200"F (93oC) before the pressure was removed.

Application Proper primer application is as important as proper bond design and adhesive choice to
obtain maximum joint properties. lmproper adhcsive application techniques can result
in partial or completc failure ofan assembly.

EC-3917 primer will give exccllcnt results under the following suggested procedurcs.
Variations from these procedures should be fully evaluated to insure bond properties
sumcient to mcet the requirements ofyour particular assembly.

Surface Preparation Suggested Cleaning Procedures lbr Aluminum

A thoroughly cleaned, dry greasc-free surface is essential for maximum performance.

Cleaning methods which will produce a breakf¡ee water film on metal surfaces are
generally satisfactory. Surface preparation should be fully evaluated with the adhesive,
especially ifresistance to specific cnvirorunents is anticipated.

l. Alkaline Degrcasc - Oakite 164 solution (9- 1 I oz./gal. water) at l90oFr lo"F
(87 *
5.6"C) for 10-20 minutes. Rinse immediately in large quantitics ofcold
running water.
2. Optimized FPL Etch Solution ( I liter):
Material Amount
Distilled Water 700 ml plus balance of liter (sec below)
Sodium Dich¡omate 28 to 67.3 grams
Sulfuric Acid 287.9 to 310.0 grams
Aluminum Chips 1.5 grams/litcr of mixed solution
To prepare I litc¡ ofthis solution, dissolve sodium dicbromate in 700 ml ofdistillcd
water. Add sulfuric acid and mix we[l. Add additional distillcd water to fill to 1 liter
Heat mixed solution to 66 to 71'C ( 150 to 160'F). Dissolve 1 .5 grams of 2024 barc
aluminum chips per liter of mixed solution. Gentle agitation will help aluminum
dissolve in about 24 hours.
*Note: Revicw and fbllow safety and health information provided by suppliers of
these materials prior to prcparation ofthis solution.
To FPL ctch panels, place them in the abovc solt¡tion at 150 to 160'F (66 to 7l'C)
for 12 to l5 minutes.
3. Rinse - Rinse panels in clear running watcr.
4. Dry - Air dry 30 minutes; forcc dry 30 minutes at 140"F (60"C).

5. It is advisable to coat the ficshly cleaned surfaccs with EC-39 t 7 within four (4)
hours añer surfacc preparation.
6. Care should be taken to avoid contaminating the clca¡ed aluminum by any substance
which will hinder the wefting acrion ofEC-3917.

B. Primer Dry and Cure

Air dry for 30 minutes minimum at 75oF (24'C) followed by force cure for 60 minutes
at 2s0oF (r 2l oc).

Note: The above primer application procedures will give satisfactory perfbrmance with
3Mrv Scotch-WeldrM Epoxy Adhcsives. Howevcr, review the particular product
technical sheet for üc optimum primcr application to be used with that product.
Thc primed surf'ace should be protected from contamination intoduced by dust,
fingcrprints, oil, ctc.

Ifextended periods ofstorage are required, wrap thc pans in unplasticized Kraft paper. lf
the cured, primed surface is contaminated with dust, it may be cleaned prior to bonding by
wiping with clcan unsized cheesccloth and ketone* type solvents.

Cleanup: Excess primer and equipmcnt may be cleaned up, prior to curing with ketone*
type solvents.
*When using solvents, extinguish all sources ofignition in the area, rcview and follow
suppliers precautionary information prior to handling these materials.

Storage & Handling Storing and Aging Precautions Avoid heat and dampness in stomge. Store ncw
shipments behind older lots. Refrigerated or freezer storage,40'F (4.4'C) or below is
¡ecommended for EC-3917. Rotate stock on a "fi¡st in - fi¡st out" basis.

Caution: Primer should be permitted to thoroughly waIm to ¡oom temperature bcfore

being used in order to prevent moisture condensation.
