Pre-requisites/Exposure Basic knowledge of physics and mathematics
Co-requisites Physics, Chemistry
Course Objectives
1. Understand the nature and role of the thermodynamics properties of matter, Internal energy,
enthalpy, entropy, temperature, pressure and specific volume
2. Be able to chart thermodynamics process on appropriate thermodynamic diagrams, such as
Temperature- entropy, Pressure-Volume, Enthalpy- Entropy
3. Be able to represent a thermodynamic system by a control mass or control volume, distinguish
the system from its surroundings, and identify work and/ or heat interactions between the
systems and surroundings
4. Be able to quantify the performance of power cycles including the effects of enhancements
such as reheat, regeneration and intercooling
5. Calculate heat transfer by conduction, convection and thermal radiation for practical
situations.
6. Analyse and calculate heat transfer in complex systems involving several heat transfer
mechanisms.
Course Outcomes
On completion of this course, the students will be able to
CO1. Understand the concepts and principles of classical thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
CO2. Analyze and evaluate various thermodynamic cycles used for energy production - work and
heat,
CO3. Apply laws of thermodynamics to flow and non-flow processes and study the modes of heat
transfer
CO4. Analyze the performance of various thermodynamic systems for gas power and steam power
cycles.
CO5. Evaluate the state of the pure substances such as compressed liquid, saturated liquid-vapor
mixture and superheated vapor using property diagrams and tables
Catalog Description
To present a comprehensive and rigorous knowledge of classical thermodynamics while retaining
an engineering perspective. To develop an intuitive understanding of thermodynamics and heat
transfer principles by emphasizing the physics and physical arguments. To present a wealth of real
world engineering examples to give students a feel for how thermodynamics and Heat transfer is
applied in engineering practice. Covers principles of classical thermodynamics. Develops
understanding of mass, energy, heat, work, efficiency, ideal and real thermodynamic cycles and
processes. Teaches first and second laws of thermodynamics, perfect gas law, properties of real
gases, and the general energy equation for closed and open systems. The ideal understanding of
modes of heat transfer and to apply conductive and convective principles to various systems.
