3 Credit Hours

Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to provide learners wth an understanding of the:
 basic structure and crystal arrangement of materials, phase diagrams, heat treatment
processes, powder metallurgy processes, and the need and application of composite
materials.
 fundamentals of practical sections - wiring connections, standards & conventions of
wiring, wiring tools, use of measuring instruments in engineering applications and
plumbing tools and practices.

Expected Learning Outcomes:


Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Identify the properties of metals with respect to crystal structure and grain size.
2. Interpret the phase diagrams of materials.
3. Classify and distinguish different types of cast irons, steels and nonferrous alloys.
4. Describe the concept of heat treatment of steels & strengthening mechanisms.
5. Explain the powder metallurgy process and the types and manufacturing of composite
materials.
6. Identify and use workshop hand tools and instruments.
7. Perform practical skills in the fitting, plumbing and wiring trades.
