Chapter 19 – TEN SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS

OF AI TO SOCIETY

Improved prosthetics and other medical aids also make it possible for people to
become more self-sufficient. The second section of this chapter explains how AI
can help people with their own medical needs.
Similar to how it is difficult, if not impossible, to fix various devices without
seeing them in use in a specific environment, humans occasionally defy the
analysis required to diagnose issues. Various methods of analysis may help a
doctor pinpoint a specific problem and address it more effectively. Today, a
patient doesn't have to go to the doctor's office multiple times (for attaching the
monitoring device) because a doctor can fit them with a monitoring device,
monitor them remotely, and use AI to do the analysis needed to make a diagnosis.
In fact, in some cases, such as with glucose monitors, the patient may even be
able to purchase the necessary device at the store, obviating the need to visit the
doctor. The third section of this chapter gives you a good overview of the various
analysis tools, even though it does not demonstrate them all.

In some situations, a robot-assisted solution can help a doctor concentrate on

issues that can only be addressed by a human and increase efficiency.
Additionally, diagnosis is made simpler, quicker, and more precise by utilizing a
variety of technological tools. For instance, using an AI can help a doctor
recognize the onset of cancer much earlier than they could on their own.

Wearing helpful monitors There are many different kinds of helpful monitors. In

point of fact, many of these monitors are beneficial to your health despite having
nothing to do with medicine. This kind of equipment ensures that you get a
workout that will benefit your health without putting you at risk of injury.

. This ring even keeps track of how you sleep to help you get a good night's sleep.
Typically, rings have a number of advantages and disadvantages. It is interesting
to note that many of the images on the website do not appear to be fitness
trackers; as a result, you can combine style and health in one package.

relying on important wearable monitors Because some human conditions change

constantly, checking only occasionally doesn't do much. The glucose level, which
diabetics use to gauge their condition, is one such statistic. The more you monitor
the rise and fall of glucose throughout the day, the easier it will be to modify your
lifestyle and medications to control diabetes. Obviously, people have used
intermittent monitoring for a long time; Simply put, this device provides the
additional level of monitoring required to determine whether diabetes is a minor
problem or a problem that affects one's life.

Although regularly monitoring a person's blood sugar levels or other statistics

about chronic diseases may appear to be a waste of time, it actually serves a
practical purpose.
A specialist can use this temporary arrangement to determine whether you want
the embedded version of the same device. While there are advantages and
disadvantages to wearing one, it is difficult to quantify the value of having one
available in the event that it is required to save a life. The greatest benefit of this
device is its monitoring capabilities. It is essential to keep an eye on some people
so that they do not need an implantable device in order to avoid surgery.

Movable monitors are typically designed to be smaller and less intrusive.

Additionally, devices that are intended for use by people who have little or no

prior medical experience must be user-friendly. Like many others, this one uses
your smartphone to connect to external sources and perform the necessary
analysis.

Despite their portability, the current medical devices are functional. AI-enabled
apps and specialized devices aim to obtain crucial data when a doctor actually
needs it, rather than waiting for it. Even if you don't buy a toothbrush to check
your technique or an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart, these small,
powerful, and easy-to-use tools will probably still be useful to you at some point.

Many of the current methods rely on making people more capable of enhancing
their own health in a variety of ways rather than simply increasing a person's
number of years of life. The portion of a person's life without major illness is
known as the healthy range. There are a ton of articles out there that will let you
know how to go past this solid reach by 30, 40, or even 50 different ways.
However, the majority of the time, it comes down to eating well, exercising
appropriately, and getting adequate sleep. It goes without saying that figuring out
the best way to eat, exercise, and sleep is nearly impossible. In the sections that
follow, we'll talk about how an AI-enabled device could mean the difference
between having 60 good years and 80 or more. It is actually no longer difficult to
find articles that discuss human life spans of at least 1,000 years in the future due
to advancements in technology.)

People who are able to maintain their levels of energy throughout the day are
able to complete more tasks with significantly lower risks of injury, product
damage, or harm to others.

The purpose of wearing an exoskeleton is not to make you Iron Man. Instead, it's
to help people succeed at tasks that are currently too tiring or just too hard for
their bodies and to reduce injuries caused by repetitive stress. From a medical

standpoint, using an exoskeleton is good because it keeps you moving, which is

important for good health.

The term "special needs" is frequently misunderstood to mean "physically or

mentally disabled" or even "disabled." However, almost everyone has a particular
need. At the end of a long day, a person with normal vision might be able to use
magnifying software to make text or graphic elements bigger. People with normal
color vision can use software that can translate colors to see things they wouldn't
normally see. At the very least, that is what people with normal vision are able to
see. As people get older, they typically need more help to hear, see, touch, or
otherwise interact with everyday objects. Similar to this, getting assistance with
activities like walking could keep a person out of a nursing home and in their
own home for the rest of their lives. The point is that, as will be discussed in the
following sections, utilizing a variety of AI-enabled technologies can significantly
enhance everyone's quality of life.

In the section titled "Considering the use of exoskeletons" earlier in this chapter,
the various ways in which exoskeletons are currently used to prevent injury,
enhance natural human capabilities, or address special needs (like allowing a
paraplegic to walk) are discussed in greater detail.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robots are now frequently used in surgery. In fact,
some surgeries would be nearly impossible to perform without robots and AI.
Still, the use of these life-saving technologies has reduced the number of errors,
improved outcomes, expedited healing, and, in general, made surgery less
expensive in the long run. The following sections discuss the various surgical
applications of AI and robots.

Making suggestions for surgery There are many different ways to look at the
whole idea of suggestions for surgery. Based on the patient's record, an AI could,
COURSE TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
MODULE TITLE: TEN SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF AI TO SOCIETY

for instance, examine all of the patient's data and offer the surgeon
recommendations for the best course of action. A surgeon could perform this, but
it would take longer and could result in errors that the AI will not make. The AI
never becomes disinterested or forgets anything; It uses the same method for all
of the data that are available.

The device will not allow the surgeon to request that music be played during the
procedure, despite the fact that the surgeon can use it to locate specific pieces of
information without having to stop. When dealing with unexpected surgical
complications, the patient receives what amounts to a second opinion as a result.
Keep in mind that the device is merely making available research that has already
been carried out by other doctors in response to requests from surgeons; There
is no actual thinking involved in this.

Assisting a surgeon The majority of robotic surgical assistance available today

assists the surgeon rather than taking their place. In 1986, the first robot surgeon
was introduced: the PUMA system. It carried out a highly delicate
nonlaparoscopic neurosurgical biopsy. During laparoscopic surgery, a gall
bladder can be removed or repaired by making one or more small incisions. The
first robots lacked the ability to finish this job.
Similar to camera anti-shake features, the da Vinci Surgical System, for instance,
eliminates the surgeon's shaking during a portion of the procedure. The system
also smooths out external vibration. In addition, the system's configuration
grants the surgeon the ability to move much more precisely than a human would,
making the procedure much more precise than it would be on its own.

Making better drugs Everybody today laments the cost of drugs. Although
medications are incredibly cost-effective, some people end up mortgaging their
homes in order to obtain them.
