Example 1
A proposed Light Rail Transit System Line 1 (LRT-1) fare
would charge ₱18 for the first four stations and ₱5 for
each additional station over the proposed fare.
a. Find the fare function f(x) where x represents the
number of stations traveled.
b. Find the proposed fare for 15 stations.
c. Find the proposed fare for 20 stations.

General Mathematics Week 1 MELC 4 Solving Real-life Problems Involving Functions

Answer
Representation: x = number of stations traveled, f(x) = fare function
18, 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑥 ≤ 4
Equation: f(x) =
18 + 5 𝑥 − 4 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 4
Solution: fare for 15 stations
18, 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑥 ≤ 4
f(15) = 18 + 5(15 – 4) Checking: f(x) = 18 + 5 𝑥 − 4 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 4

f(15) = 18 + 5(11) x 1 4 5 10 15
f(x) 18 18 23 48 73
f(15) = 18 + 55
f(15) = 73

Conclusion: The proposed fare for 15 stations is ₱73.

General Mathematics Week 1 MELC 4 Solving Real-life Problems Involving Functions
Answer
Representation: x = number of PPV hours, f(x) = payment function

Equation: f(x) = 450 + 130x

Solution: 25 hours of PPV events

f(25) = 450 + 130(25) Checking: f(x) = 450 + 130x

f(25) = 450 + 3,250 x 0 5 15 25 35

f(x) 450 1100 2400 3700 5000
f(25) = 3,700

Solution: 0.5 hour of PPV event

f(0.5) = 450 + 130(0.5) Checking: f(x) = 450 + 130x

f(0.5) = 450 + 65 x 0 0.5 1 2 3

f(x) 450 515 580 710 840
f(0.5) = 515

chip cookies in a school fair. The variable cost to make each cookie is
₱15 and it is being sold for ₱25. The organization has already shelled
out ₱790 for the cookie sale.
a. Find the profit function f(x) where x represents the number of
cookies sold.
b. If 146 cookies were sold, how much is the total profit?
c. How many cookies should be sold to gain a profit of ₱250?

General Mathematics Week 1 MELC 4 Solving Real-life Problems Involving Functions

Answer
Representation: x = number of cookies sold, f(x) = profit function

Equation: f(x) = 10x – 790

Solution: 146 cookies sold

f(146) = 10(146) – 790 Checking: f(x) = 10x – 790

f(146) = 1460 – 790 x 0 50 79 100 146

f(x) -790 -290 0 210 670
f(146) = 670

Conclusion: The profit for selling 146 cookies is ₱670.

General Mathematics Week 1 MELC 4 Solving Real-life Problems Involving Functions

Answer
Representation: x = number of cookies sold, f(x) = profit function

Equation: f(x) = 10x – 790

Solution: profit of ₱250

250 = 10x – 790 Checking: f(x) = 10x – 790

-10x = – 790 – 250 x 50 79 100 104 146

f(x) -290 0 210 250 670
-10x = -1040

f(30) = 500 + 100(x – 15) Checking: f(x) = 500, 𝑖𝑓 6 < 𝑥 ≤ 15
500 + 100(𝑥 − 15), 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 15
f(30) = 500 + 100(30 – 15) x 5 10 15 20 30
f(30) = 500 + 100(15) f(x) 300 500 500 1000 2000

Answer #1
Representation: x = number of doughnuts sold, f(x) = profit function

Equation: f(x) = 12x – 600

Solution: 100 doughnuts were sold

f(100) = 12(100) – 600 Checking: f(x) = 12x – 600

f(100) = 1200 – 600 x 0 25 50 75 100
