EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

As a data analysis intern, I worked extensively with Power BI tool to analyse

and visualize data. My main responsibilities included:

• Data Extraction and Transformation: I gathered data from various sources

and transformed it into a format suitable for analysis.

• Data Cleaning: I use data cleaning method to identifying and correcting or

removing errors, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies in data. It is an essential step
in data analysis and is crucial to ensure that the data used for analysis is accurate
and reliable. Data cleaning involves several steps, including identifying missing
or incomplete data, removing duplicate records, correcting data that is
incorrectly formatted or coded, and addressing outliers or inconsistencies in the
data.

• Data Modeling: I created a data model in Power BI by defining relationships

between tables and establishing measures and calculated columns.

• Report Development: I developed interactive reports and dashboards in Power

BI to provide insights on key performance indicators (KPIs) and trends.

• Data Visualization: I used Power BI to create dynamic and visually appealing

charts, graphs, and other visualizations to help stakeholders easily interpret data.
Data visualization is the graphical representation of data and information. It
involves the use of charts, graphs, and other visual aids to communicate
complex information in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.

• Data Analysis: I conducted in-depth analysis on the data to identify patterns,

trends, and insights that can drive decision-making.

1|Page
• Data Interpretation and Communication: I communicated my findings and
insights to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner, both in written and verbal
form.

Overall, my experience with Power BI has enabled me to develop a strong skill

set in data analysis, visualization, and communication, which I believe will be
highly valuable in any future data-driven role.

INTRODUCTION:

What is Power BI?

• Power BI is a business analytics service that provides interactive visualizations

and business intelligence capabilities with an interface simple enough for end-
users to create their reports and dashboards. The development of Power BI is a
relatively recent phenomenon, and it is the product of Microsoft's efforts to enter
the self-service business intelligence market.

• Here is a brief history of Power BI:

• In 2010, Microsoft introduced Power Pivot, a data modeling and analysis tool
for Microsoft Excel that enabled users to create more sophisticated data models
and perform more complex analyses than were possible with the basic Excel
tools.

• In 2013, Microsoft introduced Power Query, a data connectivity tool that

allowed users to connect to a wide variety of data sources and transform data
before loading it into Excel.

• In 2014, Microsoft combined Power Pivot, Power Query, and other Excel-based
analytics tools into a standalone product called Power BI for Office 365, which
was available as a cloud-based service.

• In 2015, Microsoft released a new version of Power BI as a desktop application,

allowing users to create and share interactive reports and dashboards directly
from their desktops.

• In 2016, Microsoft released Power BI Embedded, a version of Power BI

designed for software developers to embed data visualizations and analytics
capabilities into their own applications.

4|Page
• In 2017, Microsoft introduced Power BI Premium, a paid version of Power BI
that provided more advanced features and better performance than the free
version.

• In 2018, Microsoft released several new features for Power BI, including
integration with Azure Machine Learning, the ability to import Power BI reports
into Microsoft PowerPoint, and the ability to share dashboards with external
users.

• In 2019, Microsoft announced a new feature called Power BI Dataflows, which

allows users to build and manage ETL (extract, transform, load) processes
within Power BI.

• In 2020, Microsoft introduced several new features for Power BI, including
Smart Narratives, which uses natural language processing to automatically
generate written descriptions of data insights, and the ability to create paginated
reports for printing or PDF export.

• In 2021, Microsoft continued to add new features to Power BI, including the
ability to create and share personal bookmarks, the ability to build AI-powered
applications with Power BI and Azure Cognitive Services, and the addition of
new data connectors for popular services like Google Analytics and Salesforce.

• Overall, the history of Power BI has been one of continuous development and
improvement, with Microsoft adding new features and capabilities to the
product on a regular basis. Today, Power BI is one of the most popular self-
service business intelligence tools on the market, used by businesses of all sizes
to gain insights into their data and make better decisions.

Types Of Power BI:

Power BI is a suite of business analytics tools developed by Microsoft. There

are several types of Power BI, each designed to cater to different users' needs.
Here are the main types of Power BI:

• Power BI Desktop: This is a Windows-based application used to create and

publish reports and visualizations. It is a free tool that allows users to connect
to various data sources, manipulate data, create interactive dashboards, and
publish them to the Power BI service.

host Power BI reports and dashboards within their own network. It provides the
same features as the Power BI Service, but all the data and content remain within
the organization's premises.

• Power BI Embedded: This is an API-based solution that allows developers to

embed Power BI reports and dashboards within their own applications. It
provides a way to integrate Power BI features into custom applications without
requiring users to leave the application.

Data Analysis History and its

Benefits to Industry

64 | P a g e
Data Analysis History

Data analysis has a long and rich history that can be traced back to ancient civilizations.
The earliest known example of data analysis is the use of tally marks by the ancient
Sumerians in Mesopotamia around 8000 BCE to keep track of goods and livestock.

Over time, data analysis techniques evolved and became more sophisticated. In the 17th
century, the English mathematician John Graunt used data analysis to study mortality
rates in London, creating one of the first recorded instances of epidemiological
research.

In the 18th century, the French mathematician and astronomer Pierre-Simon Laplace
developed a mathematical theory of probability and used it to analyze data in
astronomy, physics, and social sciences.

In the 19th century, the British statistician Francis Galton developed the concept of
correlation and regression analysis to study the relationship between variables. In the
same period, Florence Nightingale, a British nurse, used data analysis to improve
healthcare practices and reduce mortality rates in hospitals.

The 20th century saw significant advancements in data analysis with the development
of computers and statistical software. In the 1960s and 1970s, data analysis techniques
such as regression analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and principal component
analysis (PCA) became widely used in various fields, including business, economics,
psychology, and biology.

In the 21st century, the availability of large amounts of data, commonly referred to as
"big data," has led to the development of new data analysis techniques, such as machine
learning, data mining, and artificial intelligence. These techniques have revolutionized
many fields, including finance, healthcare, and marketing, and have opened up new
areas of research and innovation.

Data analysis is crucial for decision-making in organizations because it enables

managers to make informed decisions based on reliable and accurate data. By analyzing
data, organizations can identify trends, patterns, and correlations that would be difficult

65 | P a g e
to discern otherwise. This information can help organizations make strategic decisions
about their operations, marketing, sales, and customer service.

For example, a retailer can use data analysis to identify which products are selling the
most and to whom, and adjust their inventory accordingly. A healthcare organization
can use data analysis to identify which treatments are most effective and efficient for
different patient populations. A financial institution can use data analysis to detect fraud
and to manage risk.

In summary, data analysis has a long and rich history and has become an essential tool
for decision-making in organizations. By using data analysis techniques, organizations
can gain valuable insights into their operations, customers, and markets, enabling them
to make informed decisions that can help drive their success.

LEARNINGS FROM THE PROJECT

• As a data analyst intern working with Power BI tools and completing various
tasks, I have gained valuable learning experiences that have helped me develop
my skills in data analysis.

• Firstly, I learned the importance of data cleaning and organization. Before

performing any analysis, it is essential to ensure that data is clean and accurate.
This requires identifying errors and inconsistencies in the data and cleaning
them up to avoid errors in analysis.

• Secondly, I gained experience in data visualization and report creation using

Power BI. I learned how to create different types of visualizations, such as charts
and graphs, to represent data in a more comprehensive manner. This skill is
essential in helping stakeholders understand complex data sets and making
informed decisions.

• Thirdly, I learned how to use web scraping techniques to collect data from
various sources. Web scraping is a valuable skill in data analysis, as it allows
for the collection of vast amounts of data from various sources, which can be
used to generate insights.

• Finally, I gained experience in data modeling and transformation using ETL

tools. This allowed me to transform raw data into useful formats that could be
easily analysed.

FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS

• After working as a data analyst intern and completing various tasks using Power
BI tools, I have identified some key findings and suggestions to improve data
analysis practices.

• One of the findings is that Power BI is an effective tool for creating

visualizations and reports to represent data. It allows users to manipulate data
easily, and its integration with other Microsoft products such as Excel and SQL
Server is beneficial. Additionally, using web scraping techniques can provide
valuable data from different sources, and data modeling is important for
organizing and cleaning data.

• Based on these findings, I suggest that companies continue to invest in Power
