What is home management?
IV. PROCEDURES
Introduction What I need to know? This lesson will help you learn to identify the resources available in the
family and how to properly manage these resources in order to provide
sufficiently for the family’s different needs.
Apart from money, family resources also include things non- working
members of the family may possess. These are energy, time, and
skills. Like money, these resources are finite. This should be instilled
in the minds of the members of the family.
Whar’s new? Family Resources
are those which the family possesses and make use of in order to
achieve family goals.

Resources are a stock or supply of money, materials, staff, and other

assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization in order to
DLL Template: CID_IMS
function effectively.

Types of Family Resources:

1. Human Resources
2. Material Resources
3. Non-Material Resources
Development What I know? 1. Human Resources - Every able-bodied member of the family is
considered an important human resources. People who can contribute
their time, effort, skills, strength, and expertise is considered part of the
family’s human resource.

2. Material Resources- Tangible assets such as house and lot,

furniture and appliances, jewelry, automobiles and cash are referred to
as the family’s material resources.

3. Non-Material Resources- Time, health, and experience are

intangible resources but are also important. Without non-material
resources, family members will be unable to perform their duties and
responsibilities at home, in school, and at work.

What’s in? Write True if the statement is correct False if the statement is wrong.
__________ 1. Planning is mostly a thinking process. Family resources
are those used by the family in doing household work.
__________ 2. The members of the family are important resources in
management.
__________ 3. Poor or good, there is management in every home.
__________ 4. The mother is considered the manager of the house.
__________ 5. Children should not share in managing the home.

What is it? The learners are asked to give the advantages of proper time
management. Examples are also provided.
(1) Happiness and security for having accomplished something very
important for the day;
(2) More time to spend for family members after accomplishing the
planned activity; and
(3) More time to attend to other constructive activities and worthwhile
projects.

Engagement What’s more? Time can be managed properly by scheduling activities wisely. Make
plan for every activity. Routinize some activities based on available
time and how often these tasks have to be done.

The preparation of a realistic daily time schedule is a helpful

management tool to help the students identify and prioritize activities.

enjoyment income, experienced over a given period of time by the
proper utilization of money income and real income. We must
maximize psychic income, because our ultimate goal is to derive
maximum satisfaction and peace from life. It is in the form of rewards

occupations or situations a creative artist can reap a psychic
income that money cannot match.

of time and the real income received during the same period from other
sources without spending one’s own money income. The family utilizes
this total income to obtain goods and services for the satisfaction of its

Whar’s new?

Development What I know? Components of Family Budget

BUDGET - A budget is the amount of money set aside for planned

expenses. It is a plan specifying how much money will be spent or
allocated during a particular period.

1. FOOD - This component is the most priority in the household

budget. Approximately 50% to 60% of the budget goes to the
food.
2. SHELTER & OTHER RELATED NEEDS - This include rentals
and electric bills such as electricity, water, telephone, and other
services that contribute to the physical comfort of one’s home.
3. EDUCATION - This component includes tuition fees, books,
school supplies, school projects, textbooks, and allowances.
4. HEALTH NEEDS - This is considered one of the most
important items that need to be prioritized. This include periodic
medical and dental examination and hospitalization. The budget
should be set aside whether it is spent or not in a given period
of time. This can be accumulated and set aside as savings to
meet the expenses for emergencies in the future.
5. CLOTHING - Today’s clothing needs have become only
secondary to food and other needs, like education and health,
more so if the budget is limited. Clothing need is more or less
dictated by the nature of one’s occupation, the type of social
circle one moves in, and the status symbol that goes with it.
6. TRANSPORTATION & OTHER MISCELLANEOUS

EXPENSES - Cost of transportation today has become

expensive, more so, when the family commutes everyday from
home to school or place of work. If the family owns a car, the
cost of operation and maintenance becomes part of the family
budget. Miscellaneous expenses are those which are not
included in other needs. These includes taxes, insurance,
appliances, and other related needs.
7. SOCIAL & RECREATIONAL NEEDS- Provisions for social
and recreational needs serve to balance work and play. A
family that enjoys together, stays together. Weekly outings,
DLL Template: CID_IMS
strolling in parks, picnics, going to movies, dinners, visit to
relatives, attending parties, and other social occasions are
instances of keeping family members together through sharing
and enjoying each other’s company.

What’s in? CONTINGENCY FUND - A small percent of the family income has to
be set aside for needs that may unexpectedly arise. To some families,
savings that are deposited in banks can meet contingency needs. The
accumulated savings can later be converted to the realization of some
long-term goals such as buying a house and lot, a car, or such other
expensive items which can be part of a family’s investment. The need
of savings and investments is important to ensure the family’s future.

What is it? Money is very important. It is a part of life just like time and energy.
How do we differentiate money from income?
Money is a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and
banknotes.
Income is money received, especially on a regular basis, for work or
through investments.
Engagement What’s more? Mention the importance of money in the family, but ensure that money
should come from sources that are in accordance with the law of the
people and of God.
