Castner Ice Cave Nov 2023 - R - Fairbanks

The document discusses a person's plans to visit the Castner ice cave in November 2023 and asks for advice about the experience since the entrance collapsed last year. Comments indicate that while the large initial cavern is gone, you can still access the back cave via an opening further in. Snowshoes and avoiding hiking in the water or middle are recommended. The experience will be different now but still worth visiting.

Castner ice cave Nov 2023

Has anyone been there recently? Planning to go for the first time next week from Fairbanks. Read that the entrance collapsed
last year. Will that affect the experience a lot? I probably should avoid going on a day that’s snowing right?

Haven't been there since the collapse.

I'm sure it will. You used to be able to go quite a way back into the cave, with the roof arching high above your head. I
don't know whether you can go in at all now. Certainly it would be a very different experience.

If you do go, please describe the experience and get lots of pictures. Information on what the cave is like now is pretty
sparse.

I probably should avoid going on a day that’s snowing right?

Well, I would avoid doing much hiking of any kind during a heavy snow. But a very light snow shouldn't be a big
problem.

I would take: (1) A very bright flashlight. I went to Fred Meyer and bought the brightest flashlight I could find. When I
got to the cave, I was glad I had it. (2) Snowshoes. I don't know whether you'll need them right now.

The initial large cavern is gone. You can still access the back cave via the opening about 100 yards back left as you're
facing it. It's still worth it. You also need to not hike in on the water, for obvious reasons. Bring snowshoes and hike
either bank, but not down the middle.
