Effluent Treatment Plant - Detailed Engineering
2-1 Treatment Process Concept:
To treat the incoming Effluent by “Mixed bed bio-reactor” a process modification of “Suspended
Growth” process and “Attached growth” process is provided to achieve BOD removal. Also, in the
process, excess sludge does not require separate digestion & the quantity of sludge generated. is less. This
avoids cumbersome sludge disposal exercise, which needs more manual labor and land area,
In the Effluent Treatment Plant (MBBR), mixed bed bioreactor Process (MBBR) treatment is provided. The
‘treatment units in the plant generally consist of the following:
1- Raw Sewage Pump
2- Aeration tank (with air mixing by diffusion).
3- Secondary clarifier or settler system (equipped with lamella plates and launders).
4 Treated Water cum disinfection Tank.
5- Multimedia filter (To reduce suspended solids)
oil ly
il and grease trap is a simple civil structural device, which traps oils and grease in tank. Oil and grease
floats on top by virtue of its lower specific gravity. After Effluent passes through the screen, itis stored for
a period of about one-hour in an Oil and grease trap and from this Oil and grease trap, the water is removed
from the bottom through a gap in the baffle wall. Oil and grease being lighter than Effluent, floats on the
top whereas the water free from Oil and grease is removed from the bottom and transferred by gravity to a
chamber from where it is poured into the collection cum equalization tank by gravity
‘This system is not provided in the plant since Effluent shall be directly collected from effluent line and
there is no provision to provide the same in a main line.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION:
‘The process is a combination of Suspended growth and Attached growth. A medium to fluidize the reactor
is used which increases the available surface area in reactor thereby giving it a higher hydraulic loading for
Effluent treatment, The media floats on water and therefore remains always in suspension. Air shall be
provided for both diffusion as well as rotating the media within reactor. Suitable screening is provided in
reactor chambers to ensure that media is retained within reactor.
Bacterial growth is aided on the media to ensure that Effluent when passes through reactor comes in contact,
with the media and the organics present in Effluent react with media and are bio-degraded. The outer layer
of the biological growth on media is oxygenated. The biological growth tends to increase in size and
volume owing to attachment of organics on the bio-growth, Bacteria present in the bio-growth degrade the
organic matter and being heavier, tend to break after a passage of time. They shall be collected at base
through sloughing outlets and passed to sludge filter press.
‘The reactor is made up of various cells. Staging promotes a variety of conditions where different organisms
can flourish in varying degrees. The degree of development in any stage depends primarily on the soluble
organic concentration in the bulk liquid. As Effluent flows through the system, each passing stage receives
an influent with a lower organic concentration than previous stage.
‘The attached growth process is further aided by suspended growth process, which is explained below
Operationally, Organic waste is introduced into a reactor where an aerobic bacterial culture is maintained in
suspension. The reactor contents are referred to as the “mixed liquor.” In the reactor, the bacterial culture
carries out the conversion in general accordance with the equation,
Oxidation and synthesis:
COHNS + O; + nutrients. © ____, CO; + NH3 + CsH)NO> + other end products
(Organic matter) (New bacterial cells) (8-30)
Endogenous respiration:
(CsHiNO2 + SOx ss ‘SCOs + 2Hs0 + NHs + energy (8-31) (cells)
In these equations, COHNS represents the organic matter in Effluent. Although the endogenous respiration
reaction results in relatively simple end products and energy, stable organic end products are also formed. It
can be seen that, if all ofthe cells can be oxidized completely, the ultimate BOD of the cells is equal to 1.42
times the concentration of cells. The aerobic environment in the reactor is achieved by the use of diffused or
mechanical aeration, which also serves to maintain the mixed liquor in a completely mixed regime. After a
specified period of time, the mixture of new cells and old cells is passed into a settling tank, where the cells,
are separated from the treated Effluent, A portion of the settled cells is recycled to maintain the desired
concentration of organisms in the reactor, and a portion is wasted. The portion wasted corresponds to the
new growth of cell tissue.

PH:
Most bacteria & other useful microorganisms perish if the pH is either above 9.5 or below 4.0. Generally
the optimum pH for bacterial growth is between 6.5 & 7.5.
Collection cum Equali tan!
In order to absorb fluctuations in hourly flow quantity and quality of Effluent, an equalization tank (also
called collection tank) is provided. This tank has a capacity of several hours. In present case, the collection
‘cum equalization tank has a capacity of 24 hours retention. Thus fluctuations within one day are absorbed in
this tank and the Effluent gets equalized during this period. In order to prevent septic (anaerobic) conditions
from occurring, to prevent this set of air diffusers are provided the tank equalization tank. This aeration
ensures that favorable conditions are created for development of aerobic bacteria.
Aeration or Reaction Chamber
‘The Effluent characteristic is that it is highly organic in nature. The treatment shall be carried out by
biological process. The treatment condition shall be aerobic. In order to provide a comAverda system, the
Effluent Treatment Plant designed employs MBBR system for secondary treatment. To understand the
system, the following terms should be understood: -

EUNCTION:
The main function of an Aeration or Reaction chamber in a typical MBBR process can be listed as below:~
To maintain sufficient surface area for adequate surface loading by media.
To tetain media provided within reactor for biological growth
To maintain the dissolved oxygen concentration in the waster water.
‘To maintain sufficient MLSS within reactor for bacterial degradation.
To maintain sufficient biological growth on medic for treatment.
To provide adequate detention time for the above.
MIXED LIQUOR SUSPENDED SOLIDS :- (MLSS)
A illustrated before MLSS in aeration tank indicates the presence of both active and dead bacterial cells,
‘The level of MLSS that has to be maintained depends upon the desirability of treated water quality. MLSS
level of 3000 - 5000 mg /lit would be optimum is a conventional aeration tank.
FOOD TO MICROBES RATIO (F/M): -
Itis the ratio between amounts of Organic material available to material population. In other words it in the
ratio between BODS is Kg/MLSS in kilograms. Increasing or decreasing the rate of Return Activated

CLARIFICATION
UNCTI
‘The mixed liquor from aeration tank coagulates as colloidal solids, which are otherwise non-settle able,
bacterial cell tissues with a specific gravity slightly greater than that of water. These settle able matters are
removed in the secondary clarifier. Secondary settling is significant since it affects the final treated Effluent
quality and activated sludge collected at clarifier bottom. The clarifier clarifies the water by removing
suspended solids and the biomass. Clarification takes place as the result of settling of both biomass and
suspended impurities. Hopper bottom is provided because when Effluent after bacterial activity rests for a
given time biomass and suspended impurities being heavier tend to sertle at the bottom of clarifier. Conical
bottom helps this mass (called sludge) to slide down the slope and accumulate near the pit that is connected
to the sludge purnp. The sludge from the clarifier is pumped via sludge header.
‘The bioreactor employs a Lamella plate settler, which consists of Lamella plates equidistant from each
other to provide a much higher hydraulic surface loading area within limited volume and surface area of
reactor space. The settler efficiencies match that of conventional clarification.

OPERATIC
GUIDELINES
‘The primary aim of operation of Effluent treatment plant is to ensure that the Effluent treated by the plant
meets the presoribed standards in terms of BOD/ CODY SS/ pH etc., laid down by the local bady or any
other statutory body while discharging the Effluent safely in public sewer, on land or in the water body.
‘The standards required to be met with are listed in Table 1-1. A good Effluent treatment plant must achieve
this most efficiently and economically.
3:1 Unit wise Operational Procedure
3-41 Effluent lifting pump from equalization
‘The Effluent from the Equalization tank is continuously pumped to the areation tank. The pump suction
side valve should be regulated such that the Effluent generated per day is pumped out at a constant rate.
Similarly, pumps shall not be run dry. This constant feeding of Effluent is essential to ensure good
Biological Activity in Reaction tank.
312 Reaction Tank (MBBR):
This is the most important unit in the Treatment Process. Any faulty operation of this unit would adversely
affect the treated water quality for a long time span even after the operation is rectified. ‘The Operator
would do well to understand the basic definitions, Operational Parameters explained under article 2-1

W averaa comaverda
3-1-4 Control of the MBBR:
‘The operational variables in the Effluent treatment plant include rate of flow of Effluent, air supply, MLSS,
aeration period, D.O in aeration and settling tanks, rate of sludge return and sludge condition. Since the
treatment (MBBR process) is biochemical in nature, conditions in the reaction tank should be kept uniform
atall times. As the reaction tank will receive the pumped Effluent, the flow will remain uniform at all times.
Flash loading of reactor should never be attempted, Frequent checks of DO at various points in the
Aeration tank and at the outlet, which should not be less than 1.0 mg/l, will help in determining the
adequacy of the air supply. DO values above 4.0 mg/lit do not improve the operations significantly, but
increase the aeration costs considerably.
Foaming or frothing is generally found to occur in MBBR because of the detergents used in
washing, The foam covers the EAT preventing effective O2 transfer. To do away with the foam,
spraying screened Effluent or clear water, increasing MLSS concentration , addition of anti-foar
agents can be carried out.
Normal operation of plant shall mean operating air blower, Effluent pump and sludge pump for sludge
pressing, The operator is advised to alternate operation of the above mentioned equipment every 12 hours to
avoid heating and making sure both working and standby pumps are able to run for uniform number of
‘operating hours.
34-5 Lamella Settlers
Lamella settler is designed for sludge separation from passing EMluent. The biodegraded Effluent contains
pparticles heavier in weight and provides sufficient surface area for them to settle. The sludge settles at base
and is carried out for pressing. The sludge separation is carried out by gravity and no mechanical rotating
device is adopted. However, care is to be taken to check sludge settling regularly
Sludge Removal Operation from Clarifier:
For removing Sludge from Clarifier bottom to Sludge tank, a sludge header shall be provided. The Valve
shall ensure that sludge is removed from all area of base, In case of any problem like choking of sludge
header, sludge valve failure or even cleaning the settler, the following procedures should be followed in the
same order.
Open the discharge Valve full. Due to difference in water level, the large hydrostatic pressure would ensure
complete flushing of Clarifier bottom. Again close the Valve.averda
Repeat the cycle if more sludge is to be removed. Sludge removal should be frequent to avoid development
of anaerobic conditions. Excess Sludge removal would result in watery sludge. This watery sludge
removal should be avoided. Excess Sludge should be pumped to the sludge tank. A good operation calls
wal of excess sludge from the settling tank to ensure that the sludge is full
aerobic. Sludge cakes should be removed daily for disposal manually on timely basis.
Sludge Recycle rate: As illustrated in Article 2-1 the MLSS concentration in EAT is maintained by
returning Activated Sludge from the clarifier. Generally for activated sludge process with Extended
Aeration type, the ratio between RAS ( return Activated Sludge) and Effluent inflow is 0.5 - 1.0,
‘Sludge Removal Operation from Sludge tank:
In the sludge tank the air is provided for digestion of sludge. This air should be provided continuously. At
the time of removal of sludge from sludge tank, close the air inlet valve to the sludge tank. Allow the sludge
to settle down at the tank bottom. Then after some time, take the suction from tanker & empty this sludge
tank. Sludge tank should be emptied based on manual observation. The frequency of removal of sludge is
completely depend on the inlet solids & differs site to site.

MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENT
‘Maintenance operations can be classified into two categories viz.
i) Preventive maintenance
ii) Corrective maintenance.
Preventive maintenance is more economical and provides uninterrupted service, which is essential 10
achieve the basic objectives of treatment.
Maintenance of the Effluent treatment plant includes structures, electrical and mechanical equipment,
piping etc. Electrical maintenance includes checking of the ampere taken by each motor used in treatment
plant intermittently. The Control Pane! installed in the Plant should be periodically checked by a qualified
electrician. If there is any short circuit or if the Star- Delta starter doesn’t get tripped, the fault should be
immediately rectified.
Structures:
They should be maintained in good repair, white or color washed , metallic parts painted annually.
‘The effect of corrosive gases like Hydrogen Sulphide can be minimized by proper ventilation. Dampness
inside the building should be checked as there might be tank leakages underground.
Pump Install
All Pumps are installed in the Plant are of standard makes. We reproduce some important maintenance
details of these pumps from manufacturers O&M manual. For further details the original manual can be
referred.
Do not run pumps dry for long time,
If @ pump is used to handle water containing solids and silt, it is necessary to wash out the same with clean
‘water before restarting, Restarting of the pump should done after filling the casing with clean water.
‘The Bearing should be lubricated once in.a month, Stork recomi ro Gem —2 or Indian
Oilmake grease for that purpose.
Ifthe Pump is idle for some time, it may get stuck or locked in one place. The free end of the shaft should
be given a litte jerk to ensure free rotation.
Turn the Lantern ring 2 to 3 turns. ‘This should be repeated weekly or as per need.

OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
INTRODUCTION
Maintenance comprises those operations, which are well-planned systematic program of maintaining the
machinery by taking appropriate steps to prevent breakdown well in advance before it causes major
damage. “This prevents wastage of time, production loss and prolongs the life of machines. It can be
classified as
Preventive maintenance, which constitutes works and precautions to be taken to prevent breakdown and
Corrective maintenance, which involves earrying out repairs after breakdown,
Preventive maintenance is more economical than corrective maintenance and provides uninterrupted
service, which is essential to achieve the basic objectives of treatment, viz. protection of health of the
community and prevention of nuisance. The primary aim of Effluent treatment plant operation is the
running and maintenance of the plant, efficiently and economically so that the Effluent from the plant meet
the preseribed standards in terms of BOD/COD/SS/pH ete. laid down by the local body or any other
statutory body while discharging the Effluent safely in public sewer, on land or in the water body.
‘The basic requirements of successful operation and maintenance of Effluent treatment plants are:
i) Thorough knowledge of plant and machinery and equipment’s provided in the treatment plant
and their functions.
ii) A thorough knowledge of the processes
iii) Proper and adequate tools
iv) Adequate stock of spare parts and chemicals,
¥) Assignment of specific maintenance responsibilities to operating staff
‘Systematic and periodic inspection and strict adherence to servicing schedule,

¥) Good house keeping
vi) Proper logging of all operation / maintenance activities
vil) Observation of safety precautions & procedures.
viii) Provision for water supply for drinking and other uses.
Better plant operation is possible only when the operating maintenance and laboratory staff are fully
conversant with the characteristics and composition of Effluent handled and the results achieved during
each state or unit of the treatment process.
Operation and preventive maintenance of several treatment units and the frequency of cleaning, lubrication
cof mechanical equipment’s etc, are to be strictly adhered to if optimum results are to be expected.
PROBLEM RECTIFICATION GUIDELINES
BULKING AND RISING OF SLUDGE
‘The quick settle ability of sludge is an important factor in the efficient performance of the activated sludge
plant. The SVI serves also as an index of sludge settle ability. SVI values of 80 ~ 1600 are considered
satisfactory in plants operating with MLSS of 800-3500 mg/l. Sludge with poor settling characteristics is
termed bulking sludge. Sludge bulking results in poor Effluent due to the presence of excessive suspended
solids and also in rapid loss of MLSS from aeration tank. Sludge bulking is generally due to inadequate air
supply, low pH or septicity and also due to growth of filamentous organism’s consequent to the presence of
industrial wastes containing high concentration of carbohydrates in EMMluent. Sludge bulking is controlled
by eliminating the causes and by application of chlorine to the incoming Effluent to control filamentous
growths. Chlorine requirements are 0.2 to 1.0 percent of dry solids weight in return sludge.
‘When sludge bulking occurs, the suggested remedies are:
Reduction in rate of Effluent flow into aeration tanks;
Reduction in ratio of return sludge;
Increase in air supply or
Dilution of the incoming Effluent. Chemicals that may be used to reduce bulking include chlorine, lime
(raising pH to 8.6 to 8.8) or chlorinated copper ctc. ‘These are added to the retum sludge in small doses to
ensure that they do not become toxic to micro-organisms.
aSTRUCTURES AND MECHANICAL EQUIPMENTS:
The side walls of the settling tanks should be so finished as to minimize the collection of solids, grease, oil
and aquatic growths. Collections, if any should be removed periodically by brushing and hosing them
down without disturbing the tank contents. Dark floating matter and rising bubbles on the surface indicate
improper cleaning and inadequate sludge removal
Inlet and outlet channels should be kept clean and hosed at least once a week. All baffles should be cleaned
of any sticky materials and stringy growths on the surface and edges.
‘The bearings, transmission gears, traction rollers, etc., should all be properly lubricated as per the
lubricating schedule suggested by the manufacturer.
In addition, it is good practice to dewater each clarifier at least once a year to inspect the submerged
portions of the mechanism such as flight scrapers, squeezes or lamella plates etc., repair or replace the
‘worn-out parts, check all nuts and bolts for tightness and repaint all metallic parts. Motors should be
checked periodically for overload conditions and electric wiring for proper insulation. Where cathodic
protection devices using impressed current are provided, the strength of protective current should be
checked.
RECORDS
The daily operation records should show frequency and method of cleaning, flow, flow through time,
volume of sludge and scum removed and percentage moisture in sludge, settable solids both in EMuent and
in Effluent from sedimentation tanks. The suspended solids. BOD of both influent and Effluent should be
recorded as per CHAPTER -1
AERATION TANKS
‘The operational variables in an activated sludge plant include rate of flow of Effluent, air supply, MLSS,
aeration period. D.O in aeration and setting tanks, rate of sludge returns and sludge condition. The
‘operator should posses a thorough knowledge of the type of system adopted viz. Conventional, high rate,
extended aeration, MBBR or contact stabilization so that effective control of the variables can be exercised
to achieve the desired efficiency of the plant. Inspection of mechanical aerators should be done for
bearings, bushes, and transmission gears and they should be lubricated as per the schedule suggested by the
manufacturers, The whole unit should be thoroughly inspected once in a year including replacement of
‘worn out parts and painting with anti-corrosive paint to achieve desired efficiency of the plant. The record
of operation should be maintained.
AIR SUPPLY
Frequent checks of DO at various points in the tank and at the outlet end, which should not be less than 1
mg/l, will help in determining the adequacy of the air, supply. Mechanical or surface aerators should be
kept free from fungus or algae growths by cleaning them periodically.
ues Sr Indust Ave, us rain oa 2averda
MIXED LIQUOR SUSPENDED SOLIDS
Control of the concentration of solids in the mixed liquor of the aeration tank is an important operating
factor. It is most desirable to hold the MLSS constant, at the suggested rates. The test of MLSS should be
done at least once a week, preferably during peak flow. As the MLSS will be minimum when the peak flow
starts coming in and will be maximum in the night hours when the flow drops, operating MLSS value
would be the average hourly value in a day which should be verified at least once @ month, In case of very
large plants regular daily check is desirable.
RETURN SLUDGE.
‘The return sludge pumps provided in multiple units should be operated according to the increase or
decrease in retum sludge rate of flow required to maintain the necessary MLSS in aeration unit, based on
the sludge volume index. The sludge volume index should be determined daily to know the condition of
the sludge. A value of over 200 definitely indicates sludge bulking. A good operation calls for prompt
removal of excess sludge from the secondary tanks to ensure that the sludge is fully aerobic. This should be
measured daily and recorded. The excess sludge is taken to digester directly or through primary setting,
tank
‘The bio-reactor system for smaller capacities (up to 800 cum/day) shall not require sludge recycling and
‘maintenance of MLSS since attached growth process also contributes to biodegradation of the incoming
organic matter.
FOAMING
Foaming or frothing is sometimes encountered in activated sludge plants when the Effluent contains
materials which reduce the surface tension, the synthetic detergents being the major offender. Froth,
besides being unsightly, is easily blown away by wind and contaminates the entire surface it comes into
contact with. It isa hazard to workmen because it creates a slippery surface even after it collapses. Foam
problems can be overcome by the application of a spray of screened Effluent or clear water, increasing
MLSS concentration, decreasing air supply or addition of other special anti-foam agents. The presence of
synthetic anionic detergents in Effluent also interferes with the oxygen transfer and hence reduces aeration
efficiency.

The operator should maintain a book of catalogues supplied by manufactures containing instruction sheets
of all equipment. In addition, printed or written operating and maintenance schedules should be displayed
near each equipment in the language understood by all operating staff. Lubricating schedules cleaning and
painting schedules, checks for efficiency, leaks and wear and tear and testing of safety devices, should be
followed strictly according to manufacture instructions.
All meeting devices such as weirs and float gauges should be maintained in proper working condition
including calibration. Charts should be changed at the same hour every day. Records maintained should
show total maximum and minimum rates of flow.
Operating, lubricating and maintenance instructions for all pumps and other mechanical equipment should
be strictly followed,
Special attention should be given to maintaining pumps in an efficient operating condition, free from
clogging, excessive friction or entrance losses and abnormal power consumption due to wear and tear.
Water level in the wet wells should not be lower than the minimum designed level and all accumulations of
tease and other deposits removed promptly
Floats and sequence switches controlling the pumping cycles should be examined at the beginning of each
shift.
All pumps including standby pumps should be operated in rotation so that the wear and tear is distributed
evenly.
‘All bearings, motors and electrical control equipment should be inspected daily for any overheating.
‘The manufacture directions for operation and lubrication should be strictly followed. Packing glands
should be checked for over-tightening.
‘When pumps may have to be operated manually time interval between start & stop, should not be less than
5 minutes.
Valves and piping should be regularly checked for leaks. Leaks should be attended to as per the instruction
inthe manufacturers’ catalogues.averda

SAFETY IN THE PLANT
‘The work of an operator in an Effluent treatment plant presents many hazards that must be guarded against.
‘Common types of accident are injuries from falls, deaths from drowning and asphyxiation. Narrow walks
‘or steps over tanks (particularly in darkness, rains and wind), ladder and spiral staircases are potential
anger spots where the operator should be alert; overexertion during operation of valves, moving weights
and performing other arduous tasks should be avoided. All open tasks should be provided with guard-rails
to prevent accidental falls. Screen or guards should protect Glass parts as well as moving parts. Adequate
lighting within the plant and around the plant should be provided which gives better working facility
reducing accidents on account of slipping etc. Honeycomb grating be provided on open channels to avoid
accidents on account of falling down or drowning. All workers should be compelled to observe personal,
hygiene such as washing with soap after work as well as washing before taking food. The use of antiseptics
along with washing should be emphasized.
TRAINING OF PERSONNEL
All operating staff engaged in technical and skilled work should be trained. The person who would be
looking after the maintenance and operation of the plant should be preferably involved in the activities at
the time of design, procurement and installation including inspection of equipment at manufacturers’ place
and their test and trials on completion of system.
RECORDING AND REPORTING
All operating records of the various treatment units in a plant should be properly compiled on a day-to-day
basis and daily, monthly and yearly reports prepared, maintained and periodically reviewed. These reports
will form a valuable guide to better operation and serve as an important document in the event of a legal
suit resulting from nuisance or danger attributed to the plant or for meeting the statutory requirements about
the satisfactory performance of the plant
