When an ignition key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition is
switched ON, the transponder embedded in the head of the key is energized by the
exciter coils surrounding the ignition lock cylinder. The energized transponder transmits
a signal that contains its unique value, which is received by the immobilizer (TPK3+).
The immobilizer then compares this value to a value stored in memory. This stored value
is the learned key code. If the value is correct, the immobilizer will send the start enable
password via the serial data circuit to the engine control module (ECM). If either the
transponders unique value or the calculation to the challenge is incorrect, the
immobilizer will send the start disable password to the ECM.
A current DTC will be cleared when the immobilizer detects a valid transponder
value from the ignition key.
A history DTC will be cleared after 100 malfunction free ignition cycles or when a
scan tool is used to clear DTCs.
Circuit/System Verification
Important : When using this diagnostic, more than one vehicle key is required to
ensure proper diagnosis. If more than one key is not available at the time of
service, contact the customer and ask if any other keys can be provided for
service. If unavailable, a new second key can be created.
1. Inspect all available vehicle keys that they are correct vehicle keys.
If not a correct vehicle key, replace the key.
2. While viewing DTCs with a scan tool, attempt to start the vehicle using all of the
available keys. The vehicle should start with all available keys.
If only one key results in inoperative starting and DTC B3055 is set as

Circuit Description
Modules connected to the high and low speed GMLAN serial data circuits monitor for
serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating information and
commands are exchanged among the modules. The modules have prerecorded
information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data
circuits, for each virtual network. The messages are supervised and also, some periodic
messages are used by the receiver module as an availability indication of the transmitter
module. Each message contains the identification number of the transmitter module.
The body control module (BCM) activates the serial data communication enable and the
accessory wakeup serial data circuits by applying voltage when the ignition key is in
ACC, ON or START. The serial data communication enable circuit wakes up the
electronic brake control module (EBCM) for bus communication and the accessory
wakeup serial data circuit wakes up the engine control module (ECM) and transmission
control module (TCM).

A supervised periodic message that includes the transmitter module availability has not
been received.
The module(s) is never signaled, therefore the specific subsystem(s) will not function.
Diagnostic Aids
If there are multiple non-communicating modules choose the one closest to the
data link connector (DLC).
Some modules may not have internal protection for specific voltage outputs and
may open a battery positive voltage or ignition voltage source fuse. If a voltage
input fuse is open and no short is found in that circuit, ensure that no module
output voltage circuit is shorted to ground before replacing the module.
This diagnostic can be used for any module that should communicate with high or
low speed CAN serial data providing the vehicle is equipped with the option that
uses that module.
Circuit/System Testing
Using the Diagnostic Aids above, determine the module that is not communicating that
should be tested.
Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of the module that is not
communicating.
Important : Only the high speed CAN modules have a the serial data
communication enable circuit OR the accessory wakeup serial data circuit. If the
module that is not communicating does not have one of these circuits, proceed to
step 4.
1. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the serial data
communication enable circuit OR the accessory wakeup serial data circuit and
ground.
If the test lamp does not illuminate, repair the circuit for an open/high
resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the BCM.
2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between all battery positive voltage
circuits and ground.

Service Manual2007 Captiva IMMOBILIZER ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM file:///D:/gm_europa/DISCO1/en/documents_2009/captiva/sm-c/7C2_9...
If the test lamp does not illuminate, repair the circuit for a short to ground or
an open/high resistance. If the circuit fuse is open, also test the positive
voltage outputs of the module for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal,
replace the faulty module.
3. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between all ignition voltage circuits and ground.
If the test lamp does not illuminate, repair the circuit for a short to ground or
an open/high resistance. If the circuit fuse is open, also test the positive
voltage outputs of the module for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal,
replace the faulty module.
4. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the module ground circuits and
ground.
If greater than 1 ohm, repair the ground circuit for an open.
5. Determine if the non-communicating module should use low speed CAN serial
data.
If the module is GMLAN high speed only, replace the module.
6. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance in the low speed CAN serial data circuit
between the non-communicating module and the module that displays the DTC.
If greater than 1 ohm of resistance, test the low speed CAN serial data circuit
for open/high resistance.
7. If all circuits test normal, replace the module that is not communicating.

Important : When replacing a theft deterrent module (TDM), ensure the procedure
to setup a new theft deterrent module is performed prior to the key coding
procedure.
From the scan main menu, select service programming system, then follow the
instructions on the screen.
Important : Use only a master key when performing the first relearn procedure. If a
valet key is used first, the TDM will not allow additional keys to be learned.
Important : When replacing a TDM, ensure the procedure to setup a new theft
deterrent module is performed prior to the key coding procedure.
From the scan main menu, select service programming system, then follow the
instructions on the screen.
The content theft deterrent (CTD) system, when armed, is designed to deter vehicle
content theft by pulsing the horns and exterior lamps for approximately 30 seconds
when an unauthorized vehicle entry is detected. However, the CTD System does not
affect engine starting.
An unauthorized entry can be any of the following with the CTD System armed :
When the rear compartment has been opened without the use of the keyless entry
system.
When any door is opened without being unlocked using the keyless entry
transmitter.
29 of 33 10/08/2021 23:26
Service Manual2007 Captiva IMMOBILIZER ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM file:///D:/gm_europa/DISCO1/en/documents_2009/captiva/sm-c/7C2_9...
Important : The content theft deterrent (CTD) system can be armed with the
windows or top open.
Important : The system is not armed if the doors are locked manually. The remote
keyless entry transmitter must be used to arm the CTD System.
3. Lock the doors with the LOCK button on the transmitter. The system is in arm
pending mode and will not start the arming timer until all doors are closed. The
security indicator will flash quickly; the CTD system is in the open state at this
point. The CTD system transition to the locked state when the final door is closed.
The security indicator will illuminate steady when in the locked state. If the LOCK button
is pressed after the vehicle doors have been closed, the open state will be bypassed
and the system will transition directly to the locked state with the indicator on steady.
4. The system will arm approximately 30 seconds from the time that the system has
entered the locked state. When the indicator transitions to flashing slowly, the
system is armed.Alternately, if the LOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter is
pressed a second time, the system will arm immediately, bypassing the 30 second
delay.
Locking the vehicle may be accomplished without arming the content theft deterrent
(CTD) system by locking the vehicle using the manual door locks.
If system arming has been requested by the keyless entry transmitter, it must be
disarmed.
Important : Manually unlocking the doors does not disable the CTD armed mode.
Also, disconnecting the battery or pulling fuses does not disable the armed mode,
as the body control module (BCM) stores the CTD status in memory.

Service Manual2007 Captiva IMMOBILIZER ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM file:///D:/gm_europa/DISCO1/en/documents_2009/captiva/sm-c/7C2_9...
The following is a description of each component used in the content theft deterrent
(CTD) system :
The CTD system is an internal function of the body control module (BCM) which utilizes
serial data and various switch inputs to perform CTD functions.
When the BCM detects an unauthorized entry, it activates the horns and exterior lamps.
When the BCM detects an unauthorized entry, the BCM will first enter the warn-away
mode. Warn-away will command short chips from the horn. If after 10 seconds the
unauthorized entry still exists, the BCM will transition to the alarm mode. The horn and
lamps will pulse for 30 seconds. Following the 30-second alarm period is a 10-second
time-out. The system will then re-arm.
The CTD system uses the door ajar switches in the door jambs as one method to
activate the alarm.
The BCM monitors all door ajar switches via a discrete input from each door ajar switch.
If the BCM receives a ground signal from a door ajar switch when the CTD system is
armed, the BCM activates the alarm.
Inputs
Outputs
The vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system functions are provided by the theft deterrent
module (TDM) and the engine control module (ECM). When an ignition key is inserted
into the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition is switched ON, the transponder
embedded in the head of the key is energized by the exciter coil surrounding the ignition
31 of 33 10/08/2021 23:26

lock cylinder. This exciter coil is part of the TDM. The energized transponder transmits a
signal that contains its unique value, which is received by the TDM. The TDM then
compares this value to a value stored in memory. If the values match, the TDM will send
the fuel enable password via the serial data circuit to the ECM. If the transponders
unique value is incorrect, the TDM will send the fuel disable password to the ECM. It is
important to note that while it is referred to as the fuel enable/disable password, the
vehicles starter may also be disabled, preventing engine cranking.
When the ECM receives the TDM fuel enable password, the ECM will challenge the
password. The ECM sends this challenge back to the TDM via the serial data circuit.
Both the ECM and TDM perform a calculation on this challenge. If the calculated
response from the TDM equals the calculation performed by the ECM, the ECM will
allow vehicle starting.
Vehicles with steering column mounted ignition switches have the exciter integral with
the theft deterrent module (TDM), which is located within the steering column. The TDM
can learn up to 10 keys (transponder values).
The TDM uses the following inputs: battery voltage, ignition switched voltage and
ground circuit. The theft deterrent control module uses the following outputs :
password exchange and challenge/response with the engine control module (ECM).
When an ignition key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition is
switched ON, thetransponder embedded in the head of the key is energized by the
exciter coils surrounding the ignition lock cylinder. The energized transponder transmits
a signal that contains its unique value, which is received by the theft deterrent control
module. The theft deterrent control module then compares this value to the learned key
code stored in memory. The theft deterrent control module then performs one of the
following functions :
If the transponder value matches the values stored in the TDM memory, the TDM
will send the fuel enable message to the ECM via the serial data circuit.
If the transponders unique value does not match the value stored in the TDM, the
TDM will send the fuel disable message to the ECM via the serial data circuit.
If the TDM is unable to measure the ignition key transponder value, the TDM will

When the engine control module (ECM) receives the theft deterrent module (TDM) fuel
enable password, the ECM will challenge the password. The ECM sends this challenge
back to the TDM via the serial data circuit. Both the ECM and TDM perform a calculation
on this challenge. If the calculated response from the TDM equals the calculation
performed by the ECM, the ECM will allow vehicle starting.
The ECM will disable vehicle starting if any of the following conditions occur :
The ignition key for Passkey III+ (PK3+) equipped vehicles is a standard ignition key with
a transponder located in the plastic head of the key. The transponder value is fixed and
unable to be changed. The vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system uses the ignition key
transponder value to determine if a valid ignition key is being used to start the vehicle.
There are approximately 3 trillion possible transponder values.
Fleets keys allow full access to the vehicle just as a master key would. However, unlike a
master key which may only learn 10 keys to a particular vehicle, an unlimited number of
fleet keys may be learned to the vehicle. Fleet keys are only used in vehicles configured
for police fleet use.
Security Indicator
The theft deterrent module (TDM) can command the clock to illuminate the security
indicator only when the ignition key is in the ON position. The TDM will command the
security indicator be illuminated any time a fault is noted in the VTD system and when
engine starting is disabled.
