IRTS SRUT Work Procedure

This document provides a procedure for using short range ultrasonic testing (SRUT) to inspect the annular plates of above-ground storage tanks for corrosion screening. It describes the purpose, scope, references, personnel requirements, equipment, calibration, scanning technique, and records management for SRUT inspections. SRUT uses guided waves to screen for corrosion damage within 1 meter of the probe on the inner surface of annular plates. A minimum 40mm protrusion is needed for probe contact. Detected echoes are compared to a reference plate to evaluate corrosion severity.

Description: Generic Procedure for In SERVICE CORROSION SCREENING INSPECTION of AST
Annular Plates using SRUT

1.0. PURPOSE

To evaluate the in service condition of the carbon steel annular ring or shell of the storage tank and
vessel annular reinforcing ring using a manual ,short range guided wave ultrasonic method.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure describes the requirements for in service ultrasonic testing of storage tank annular and
floor plate extension or vessels reinforcing rings to screen for corrosion damage.

3.0 LIMITATIONS

The method uses short range guided wave ultrasonic technique to screen for corrosion damage in the
hidden plate within 1 meter of the probe displacement (depending upon the plate condition). Detected
echoes are compared with a reference plate in order to evaluate severity of any indication. The test
plate contains slots to 50% depth having both top and bottom side discontinuities. It should be noted
that the method is most sensitive to rapid change in section, and is insensitive to slow changes in
section.

A minimum of 40mm protruding plate (chime) is required for the ultrasonic probe to make effective
contact and the actual distance than can be covered shall also be limited by the level of corrosion such
that the heavier the corrosion the less the distance covered.

At the time of testing, technicians shall have in their possession copies of the acceptance criteria
if required by the job and Client specification.

5.0 PERSONNEL

Personnel qualification shall be in accordance with Company Written Practice with Data
collection and analysis by an LRUT Level II. Final report shall be signed off by a CSWIP LRUT
Level III trained Engineer.

6.0 EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES

6.1 Equipment - ISONIC 2005/6 UTFD.

a) Special probe to suit the plate thickness,

b) Performance calibration plate with machined defects for equipment set up and
technique validation, if required by the client.

6.2 Ultrasonic thickness gauge.

6.2.1 A thickness gauge working on the principle of measuring the time of flight of an Ultrasonic
pulse through the test specimen and multiplying this time by the velocity of Sound in the
material shall be used for thickness cross checking.

6.2.2 Calibration of thickness gauge shall be undertaken by setting the material sound velocity
and adjustment with two known thickness on a calibration block, on higher side and another on
lower side to the expected thickness to be measured

6.2.3 Accessories

a) Transducer and thickness gauge.

b) Each unit shall have transducer(s) of type, size and frequency compatible with the
unit and in line with governing specification.

c) Transducer with badly worn or damaged faces shall not be used.

d) Calibration blocks, in the form of specific thickness of material, or as step wedge,

shall accompany the instrument.

e) Machined parallel faces of the test specimen may also be used for calibration
purpose, where none available.

Areas, which shall be scanned, shall be free from loose scales and heavy rust deposit. Any non-
adherent coating to be removed.

8.0 TEST REQUIREMENTS

Prior to commencement of the examination, the following shall be obtained:-

a) Type & thickness of material.

b) Type of coating & thickness.
c) Sample of material with known thickness, where necessary.
d) The relevant information for preparing the report
e) Customer Supplied Calibration Plate

9.0 CALIBRAION OF EQUIPMENT

9.1 ISONIC 2005/6 UTFD \

9.1.1 For making DAC, a calibration block of the same velocity to be tested shall be made with
(refer Appendix 1) slots to 50% of the nominal thickness at different distances from the
shell with reference to the testing coverage.

9.1.2 The sound velocity in the material and thereby the transit time for a given thickness and
material shall be assumed to be constant.

9.1.3 Test range has to be calibrated either by increasing or decreasing the material velocity till
you get the correct value.

9.2 Thickness Gauge

9.2.1 For calibration, at least two thickness readings on test block of know velocity shall be
used; one representing thickness near the maximum of the range to be measured and another
near the range minimum.

9.2.2 The sound velocity in the material and thereby the transit time for a given thickness and
material shall be assumed to be constant.

9.2.3 Greater accuracy can be obtained when equipment shall be calibrated with known
thickness of material to be measured.

9.2.4 Ultrasonic thickness gauges shall, under certain conditions, display readings which are
twice (or, in some cases, three times) the actual material thickness being measured. This
situation is possible when measuring thickness below the minimum specified range of the
transducer. Care shall be taken to avoid such mistakes during recording the readings.

A datum point and scan positions shall be clearly marked on the work piece. Datum shall be
used as reference for readings obtained and reporting.

10.2 Couplant

Couplant used shall be water soluble gel UCA-2M or similar to give maximum acoustic
transmission between transducer face and material under examination and shall not be
detrimental to the surface being inspected. All residues shall be removed on completion of work.

10.3 Coverage

10.3.1 Testing shall be carried out from the chime or producing plate to analyze the internal
condition of the plate. As near to 100% of the tank Annular Plate should be inspected
given constraints from geometry and the technology itself.

11. TECHNIQUE

11.1 The nominal plate and paint thickness of the protruding plate shall be determined by
ultrasonic thickness inspections at 3 points between each lifting lugs where the scan will
be carried out in clockwise direction. These details shall be recorded on UT report format.

11.2 Areas between each lifting lugs if present/or 1 meter maximum, shall be scanned one by
one and saved as a scan file with the appropriate file name for reporting.

12.0 CLEANING

Residue couplant shall be removed from the surface.
