Hence Provide 6 mm dia. mild steel ties @ 280 mm clc.
Example 38.6. Design of rectangular column : Design a rectangular column of 4.5
m unsupported lengh, restrained in position and direction at both the ends, to carry an
axial load of 1200 kN. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
Solution. For a column with the above end conditions, effective length = 0.65 times
the actual length = 0.65 x 4500 = 2925 mm.
Let us use 1% steel. Also let width b=D.
Assuming that emins0.05 Din appropriate direction, Eq. 38.2 will be applicable.
Pu =0.4 fct Ac + 0.67 f Asc. Hence,
1.5 x 1200 × 10 = 0.4 >x 20 [A, -0.01 A,] + 0.67 x 415 x 0.01 Ag.
From which Ag = 168216 mm?
b. D= D.D= 168216. From which D= 580 mm and b=;D= 290 mm
However, provide 300 mm x 600 mm column, from practical considerations.
A, = 0.01 x 168216 = 1682.2 mm
For column of rectangular shape, let us provide 8 bars.
Area of each bar = 1682.2/8 = 210.27 mm. Dia. of bar= 16.36 mm
Since the actual area of concrete provided is more than required, let us provide
8 bars of 16 mm dia. Actual 4,=8x 201.06 = 1608.5
1608.5
% steel = x 100 = 0.89 %>0.8%.
300 x 600
Before checking for the load capacity of the column, let us check for the slenderness
and eccentricity requirements.
,= 2925 mm : l/b= 2925/300=9.75 < 12 ; le/D=2925/600 = 4.875 < 12
Hence the column is a short column, in both the directions
In one direction ( i.e. x-direction)
D 4500 600 = 29 mm
emin. E + +
500 30 500 30
0.05 D=0.05 x 600 = 30 mm.
Emin < 0.05 D.
In the other direction (i.e. y-direction)
4500 300
emin = 500 +b=30 = + = 19 mm (subject to a min. of 20 mm)
500 30
1014
REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES
emin = 20 mm ; 0.05 b =0.05 x 300 = 15 mm emin > 0.05 b
Hence Eq. 38.2 is not strictly applicable. and the column is to be designed as an eccentrically
todded column. Alternatively, let us keep b= 400 mm, so that 0.05 b= 0.05 x 400 =20 mm
= emin. and redesign the column.
Redesign : b= 400 mm.
400 x D = 168216 :. D= 168216 /400 = 420.5 mm.
Hence adopt a column of size 400× 450 mm, 450 mm
and provide 8 bars of 16 mm dia, arranged as shown
in Fig. 38.6.
8@
Using 6 mm dia. ties, spacing will we the least 250 mm
of the following 400
() Least lateral dimension = 400 mm
(Ü) 16 × o = 16 × 16= 256 mm
(ii) 48 x o, = 48 x 6 = 288 mm. Hence provide 6
mm dia. ties @ 250 mm clc, including two open ties FIG. 38.6
as shown in Fig. 38.6.
PROBLEMS
Example 38.2. Design of short column
Design a short axially loaded square column, 500 mm x S00 mm for a service load
of 2000 kN. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
Solution : Service load = 2000 kN, Load factor = 1.5
P, = 2000 x 1.5 = 3000 kN= 3000 x 10 N
Min. eccentricity when the effective length of the -500
column is not given, is equal to 20 mm. But 0.05 D
=0.05 x 500 =25 mm. Hence min. eccentricity is less
than 0.05 D, and therefore Eq. 38.2 is applicable. 8-25
P, = 0.4 f£ Ac + 0.67 f, A, 500
3000 × 10 = 0.4 x 20 (500x 500 - A,) +0.67 x 415 A,
or 278.05 A, 8 A, = 1000000 6 mm
280 mm cdc
From which A, = 3703.02 mm?
Min. area of longitudinal reinforcement = 0.8 %
0.8
x 500 x 500 = 2000 mm
100
A, =3703.02 mm 280
.. No, of 20 mm dia. bars =3703.02 / 314.16 = 11.79
This number is large
No. of 25 mm dia. bars = 3703.02 / 490.87 = 7.54
Hence provide 8 Nos. of 25 mm dia. bars. 280
Actual A, =8 x 490.87 3927 mm?
Using 6 mm dia. ties, spacing is the least of the 40
