Short Essay
The first few lectures of Introduction to Sociological Thinking and Writing mainly
talked about using sociological perspective to think over questions, methods to find
out what is worth researching when studying sociology and raising relevant questions,
and reading skills for sociology texts which may be complex and tough to interpret. In
the following part of this essay, I will talk about my chosen topic, my plan to analyze
the topic through a sociological lens, and the probable differences between
sociological perspective and commonsense when analyzing one issue related to the
chosen topic.
In the term of taking this course, I have confirmed my topic to research which is about
the change and impacts of popular culture on social media. To be more detailed, I am
interested in how popular culture on social media evolute and spread as the time goes
by, and what impacts does this form of popular culture have on people’s everyday
behaviors and habits in real life.
To form a deeper understanding on the development and spread of popular culture on
social media, further observation and research are required. Based on what was taught
on the lectures, one of the differences in approaches between daily and sociological
analysis is that the former is rely on personal experience and socialization while the
latter relies on the information and data rigorously collected in the social world and
social relationships. As a I am going to do the sociological research rather than a daily
practice, employing sociological theories may be more appropriate. Instead of
depending on everyday observation and personal experiences to conclude the
development pattern of popular culture on social media, I plan to conduct a survey or
interviews to get reliable knowledge of the impacts of popular culture on people and
people’s attitudes towards the spread of popular culture showed on social media.
Additionally, social imagination is critical when analyzing the phenomenon about
popular culture on social media. Besides simply considering the phenomenon on
sociological perspectives, I am going to combine situation of popular culture with
other disciplinaries like economics, politics, and history, so that a more
comprehensive conclusion can be drawn. Another important factor for sociological
thinking is focusing on sociological facts, which means whatever subjective ideas I
may have on the topic, I still need to be objective and analyze the social facts without
prejudices. Talking of the steps of doing sociological research, my plan is to have a
general knowledge of the topic first, then seeking researchable questions, reading
relevant literatures and collecting information or data for analysis, analyzing the
phenomenon, and finally draw a conclusion.
Since sociological analysis differs from the everyday one a lot, there will be some
differences. To set the research on people’s preference of popular culture on the social
media an example, if viewing through a commonsense standpoint, I can simply
observe the everyday behaviors of people around me and draw up a subject
conclusion. But if we use sociological perspective to analyze this topic, we need to
conduct survey to get data or interview numbers of people to acquire more detailed
information. Additionally, the process of analysis may differ. A commonsense
standpoint can depend on one’s experience and viewpoints to give an empirical
conclusion, while sociological perspective asks for reading enough amounts of
sociological texts, answering the relevant questions with evidence, and come out with
solutions which are moral and able to make the world a better place.
Above is my understanding of sociological perspective. Hopefully I can combine
sociological lens and the skills learnt on lectures to make my research topic reliable
and well-established.
