Vacancies for: Junior Clinical Fellow in Burns and Plastic Surgery (Locally
Employed Doctor)
These posts are ideal for Doctors considering pursuing a career in Plastic Surgery.
This could either be doctors at the start of their career wishing a ‘taster’ period in
plastic surgery prior to application for core surgical training or for those who have
completed core surgical training wishing to expand their clinical experience and CV
with the aim of becoming more competitive at the time of specialist training post
application. It would also provide ideal experience for doctors wishing to pursue
careers in allied surgical specialties such as orthopaedics, ENT, surgery,
neurosurgery paediatric surgery and aspects of general surgery.

Wythenshawe Hospital
Wythenshawe Hospital is one of the 4 teaching hospital for Manchester Medical
School. It offers the full range of adult plastic surgical services, including hand and
upper limb surgery, microvascular breast reconstruction, and complex reconstruction
cases with gynaecology, cardiothoracic & general surgery. In addition it
is one of the busiest plastic surgery trauma centres in the country performing the
full range of emergency surgery as well as housing the sub-regional burns centre
with dedicated burns intensive care beds.
Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital - RMCH
2009 saw the amalgamation of Manchester’s three dedicated children’s hospitals in
one new state of the art children’s hospital that is now the largest children’s hospital
in the UK. This is part of the Central Manchester Foundation Trust site based just
outside the city centre, next to the University of Manchester.
The hospital houses the sub regional cleft lip and palate and paediatric burns
centre for Manchester and surrounding area. In addition the hospital provides a full
paediatric plastics trauma service and also undertakes a wide range of general
paediatric plastic surgery.
The department across both sites also offers extensive research opportunities in
conjunction with the University of Manchester, one of the few such departments in the
country.
Duties and responsibilities include day to day care of inpatients, trauma referrals
under the supervision of consultant and registrar staff and associated patient related
administrative tasks. Full opportunities will be given to attend out-patient clinic and
operating sessions. Appointees will be expected to contribute to departmental audit
and research activities and will be strongly encouraged to take these forward to local,
national and international presentation and publication. Such activity is supported by
a well resourced library with 24 hour access and IT centre in the hospitals dedicated
Education & Research Centre (ERC).
Appointees will also be expected to attend and appropriately contribute to
departmental educational sessions. The department also contributes to multiple
MDT’s in burns care, breast cancer management and skin cancer management and
the appointee will be encouraged to attend and contribute. .
Conditions of Employment
Registration
The post holder is required to hold current registration with the General Medical
Council on commencement.
Medical Screening
Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical examination
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
The post holder will be required to demonstrate their ability to perform cardio
pulmonary resuscitation and undergo further training in this area if deemed necessary.
Ionising Radiation Protection
All medical staff employed by, or working within, South Manchester University
Hospitals NHS Trust are required to hold a valid Ionising Radiation Protection
Certificate. Regular courses are held at which any member of staff not holding a
current certificate may attend, further details of which are available from the Medical
Staffing Department.
