ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART IN THE PRODUCTION OF ARTS

AND CRAFTS INSPIRED BY THE CULTURE OF EAST ASIA

https://www.bulbapp.com/u/elements-and-principles-of-design

As an element of design, point gives the eye an area to focus on. Point also
shapes how the eye connects specific area as to create an image. A line is a “moving
point” that occurs naturally in the world. It can have visual or verbal meanings.
Form, along with shape and mass, essentially, defines an object in space. Movement
as a design element shows the sometimes physical side art. Capturing movement in
a static image is no easy task for an artist. Colour is very important in design because
it has the power to change the mood or meaning of art. Depending on the culture,
colour can have symbolic meanings that add more significance to art. Pattern is the
repetition of a form. It can be used to create a structure that organizes a piece of art.
Through the use of touch, texture is used in art to help describe the form of an
object. These can be literal in a design, or an artist can create the illusion of texture
in her artwork. Visual balance as a design principle makes an image
understandable; it creates a focal point that helps the viewer recognize the main
subjects. Proportion is the size of the relative parts that make up a whole object or
form. Rhythm in a static image may be difficult to comprehend sometimes, but a
piece of art can have a movement to it that the eye follows.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ARTS AND CRAFTS IN EAST ASIA

CHINA
The character of Chinese painting, like that
Chinese calligraphy is closely bound up with the nature
of the medium. The basic material is ink, formed into a
short stick of hardened pine soot and glue, which is
rubbed to the required consistency on an ink stone with
a little water.
Chinese calligraphy is the written form of
Chinese that unites the languages (many mutually
unintelligible) spoken in China. The early Chinese
written words were simplified pictorial images, indicating
meaning through suggestions or imagination.

JAPAN
Origami is the art of paper-folding. Its name
derives from Japanese words on (folding) and kami
(paper). Traditional origami consist of folding a single
sheet of square paper into sculpture without cutting,
gluing, taping or even making it.

Woodblock printing is a technique best known

for its use in the ukiyo-e artistic genre of single sheets,
but it was also used for printing books in the same
period.

Kabuki Makeup is also another way of face

painting which has two types:
1. standard makeup - applied to most actors
2. kumadori makeup - applied to villains and heroes
- It is composed of very dramatic lines and
shapes using colours that represent certain
qualities.

Anime is a term for a style of Japanese comic book

and video cartoon animation in which the main
characters have large doe-like eyes. Anime is the
prevalent style in Japanese comic books or manga.
Storylines are often very sophisticated and complex and
extend into episodic series.

KOREA
Theater masks were often made of alder wood,
with several coats of lacquer to give the masks gloss, and
waterproof them for wearing. They usually also painted
and often had hinges for mouth movement.

Drums - plays an important part in traditional Korean music, ranging from

folk music to royal court music. There are a wide variety of shapes and sizes, for use
both in accompanying other instruments and in special drumming performance.

Buk is a traditional Korean drum which is used to

refer to shallow barrel-shaped drum, with a round
wooden body that is covered on both ends with animal
skin.
Changgo, also spelled changko or changgu,
hourglass-shaped (waist) drum used in much of Korea’s
traditional music. It is about 66 cm. long and has two
heads stretched over hoops; one of this is struck with a
hand and other with a stick.

K-Pop is a genre of popular music originating in

South Korea. While the modern form of K-Pop can be
traced back to the early 90s, the term itself has been
popularized since the 2000s.
