THE MODAL VERB EXPRESSION

A. What are modal verbs?


1. Modal verbs and their meaning
Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are
special verbs which behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal
verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give additional information about the
function of the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety of
communicative functions.
Here are some characteristics of modal verbs:
 They never change their form. You can't add "ed", "ing"...
 They are always followed by an infinitive without "to" (e.i. the bare infinitive.)
 They are used to indicate modality allow speakers to express certainty,
possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity, ability

Modal verbs are followed by an “infinitive” without "to", also called the bare infinitive.
Examples:

B. Modal Verb (Expression) Tutorial


Review and study them as many times as you want.

1. Express Ability

To express that someone has the power or skill to do something, can and be able to are used.
Examples:
I can't help you. I am busy.
I'm unable to help you.
When I was young I was able to earn my living pretty well; I could work hard. Now I can't. I'm
too old.
I can stand on my head for five minutes.
Can you speak Arabic?
Yes, I can.

Express ability in the present as follows:
I can speak good English.

Can is always followed by an infinitive without "to."
Examples:
I can ride my bike and I can drive a car, but I can't drive a lorry.

2. Asking For And Giving Permission

When you ask for permission to use something that belongs to someone else you have to do your
best to be polite. It is desirable to use the word "please."

3. Making Offers

a) How to make offers in English?


It is common that English speakers make offers in conversations in order to be polite and
helpful. When they do so they use these expressions:
Can I… "please."?
Shall I… "please."?
Would you like to… ?
How about if I...?
English learner must be able to make offers as well as accept or reject them. The following are
useful expressions to do so.

Examples:
"Can I help you "please."?"
"Shall I open the window for you please?"
"Would you like another cup of coffee?"
"Would you like me to clean the board?"

Remember:
Shall, can and will are followed by the verb without to.
Example:
"Can I help you?"
"Shall I bring you the mobile phone?
Shall is more formal than can.
Would you like… is followed either by a noun, or by the verb with to.
Example:
"Would you like to some tea ?"
"Would you like to drink some coffee?

4. Making an Appointment

Being able to make and cancel an appointment is an important skill in English. You need to be
able to:
1. make an appointment,
2. respond to an appointment and
3. cancel an appointment.
Here are some expressions you can use to do this concisely and clearly.
1. Asking to meet:
Are you available on….... / next...?
Examples:
free on ... / next...?
Can we meet on ... / next ...? "Are you available on the 17th?"
would next ... be ok? "Can we meet on the 16th?"

What about next ... ? "How does the 3rd sound to you?"
Is next ... ok? "Are you free next week?"
"Would Friday suit you?"
"Is next Tuesday convenient for you?"
"What about sometime next week?"
2. Responding to an appointment:
Yes, next Tuesday is fine free on... /

on the 16th would be fine.

I'm afraid I can't on ....

"Yes, Monday is fine."

"Ah, Wednesday is going to be a little difficult. I'd much prefer Friday, if that's alright with
you."
"I really don't think I can on the 17th. Can we meet up on the 19th?
3. Cancelling an appointment
You can cancel an appointment as follows
 Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen business, I will be unable to keep our
appointment for tomorrow afternoon.
 Would it be possible to arrange another time later in the week?
 I’m afraid that I have to cancel our meeting on Wednesday, as something unexpected
has come up.
 You know we were going to meet next Friday? Well, I'm very sorry, but something
urgent has come up.
 I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to meet you after all. Can we fix another time?

5. Making Invitaion

Do you know how to invite someone to your house for dinner or to go to the movies?
What do you say in English when someone invites you?
Here are some common expressions you can use when making or responding to invitations
a) Inviting:
 Do you want to go to the movies tonight?
 Would you like to go to the theater tomorrow?
 Would you be interested in going to the the stadium next Sunday?
 How do you fancy going to the the restaurant for dinner?
 How about going to the movies?
 Care to come over for lunch?
 I was just wondering if you would like to come over for a drink.
 We'd be delighted to have you over for my birthday party.
 How about if……
b) Accepting invitations:
 Sure. What time?
 I'd love to, thanks.
 That's very kind of you, thanks.
 That sounds lovely, thank you.

(*rain check: used to tell someone that you cannot accept invitations now, but would like to
do so at a later time)
Dialogue Example:
Mike and Ann are in a wedding party:
Mike : Do you want to dance?
Ann : No thanks. I'm a bit tired right now
Mike : How about having a drink?
Ann : Sure, I'd love too!

6. Talking Abaout Preferences

Talking about your preferences:


a) Questions about preferences tea or coffee
Which do you prefer, tea or coffee?
Which do you prefer, studying mathematics or physics?
Which do you prefer to, drink juice or mineral water?
Which do you like better, basketball or football?
Do you prefer pizza or spaghetti?
Would you prefer to eat a cake or an apple?

7. Talking About Likes And Dislikes

Expressing likes and dislikes


To talk about your likes and dislikes, you can use these expressions.

I'm mad about basketball, but I can’t bear ice hockey.
I adore reading poetry, but I loathe doing the housework.
If you neither like nor dislike something:
"I don't mind doing the housework."

Things to remember about likes and dislikes:
When these expressions are followed by a verb, the latter is put in the -ing form.
Examples:
"I like listening to music." - "I like to listen to music."
"I hate wearing sunglasses."- "I hate to wear sunglasses."

Note that "very much" & "a lot" always come after the things you like.
Examples:
"I like basketball very much/ a lot. NOT "I like very much/a lot basketball".
Be careful when you use "I don't mind..."
Examples:
"Do you mind playing football?"- "Do you mind to play football?"
"No, I don't mind."(Although it's in a negative form, it means that it's ok for me. I neither love
it nor hate it.)
Dialogue Example:
Steve is at home. His girlfriend comes in...Notice how they express their likes and dislikes
Steve : Hello, darling. Do you fancy watching a film tonight?
Girlfriend : Oh, no thanks, I don't really feel like watching a film tonight. How about
going out instead.
Steve : OK. Do you feel like going to the theater?
Girlfriend : Oh, no. I hate it. Do you like eating at the new Chinese restaurant?
Steve : I don't mind. The Chinese cuisine is alright.
Girlfriend : Well I really love it. Let's go.

8. Expressing Prohibition

To express prohibition the following expressions are used to :


1. It is prohibited to enter the room
2. You aren’t allowed to enter the room
3. You aren’t allowed to entering the room
4. You mustn’t enter the room
5. You aren’t permitted to enter/ ... entering... the room
6. It is forbidden to enter/ .... entering.. the room
Examples:
1. Prohibition Parking is strictly prohibited between these gates.
2. Students aren't allowed to come too late to school.
3. Drivers mustn't park their cars here.
4. It is forbidden to walk on grass.
5. Smoking isn't permitted in hospitals.
6. People aren't permitted to throw rubbish here.

Example Dialogue:

9. Asking For Advice And Giving Advice

Things to remember about asking for and giving advice:
1. "Advise" is a verb.

2. "Advice" is a noun.
Example:
"My father gave me this piece of advice when I was young: “never give up"
3. "Ought to" has nearly the same meaning as "should". The only difference is that "ought to "
refers to a moral or external obligation but should is more of an advice.
Example:
"You ought to stop smoking."
"You should stop smoking."
4. "You'd better" is the short form of "you had better"
Example:
"You'd better see a doctor!" = "You had better see the doctor"

Things to remember about suggestions:
1. The verb "suggest" can be followed by either:
 should + verb = I suggest (that) we should go to the theater.
 a verb (in the subjunctive form)= I suggest (that) we go to the movies.
2. "That" is optional:
 "I suggest that we should visit Paris".
 "I suggest we should visit Paris".
Example Dialogue:
Two friends talking about where to go this evening:
Alice: You know Alan, why don't we go to the cinema to watch Titanic?
No, let's not. We've seen the film many times before. What about going to the library?
Alan:

12. Expressing Regret


Expressing regret means having a feeling of sadness about something that you did or did not
do. To express regret in English, you may use many different structures. Here are some of them.
wish / if only
You can express regret by using wish or if only:
I wish / if only + Past perfect
Examples:
 I wish I had worked harder.
 If only I hadn't eaten so much.

Conditional type 3
You can also express regret by using a conditional sentence type 3
If + past perfect - would + have + past participle
Examples:
 If I had worked hard, I would have passed the exam.
 If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have been sick.
should have
Regret may also be expressed by using a modal should:
Should have + Past Participle
Examples:
 I should have sent him an invitation.
 He should have done the work.
I regret...
You can express regret by using:
regret + Verb + ing or regret + Noun
Examples:
 He doesn't regret leaving her.
 I regret the things I didn't do.

13. Apologizing

To apologize is to tell someone that you are sorry for having done something that has caused
him inconvenience or unhappiness:
Examples:
I must apologize to Isabel for my late arrival.
I'd like to apologize for my trouble making.
Trains may be subject to delay on the northern line. We apologize for any inconvenience
caused.
Here are some expressions you can use to make and respond to apologies

Things to remember about making a request:
1. "Would you mind..." is followed by a gerund (verb+ing).
Example: "Would you mind lending me your book?"
2. The response to the following request:
A: "Would you mind giving me your book?"
is either
 "No, I don't mind". (which is a positive response to the request. It means that I accept

 or "Yes." (which is a negative response to the request. It means that I don't want to
lend you my book.)

repot, praktis dan menarik seperti handphone, telephone, telegraph, e-mail tetapi surat tidak begitu
saja dilupakan. Fungsi surat sebagai sarana pemberitahuan dan permintaan banyak digunakan di
masa modern seperti ini. Seperti halnya ketika kita sedang melamar pekerjaan, meminta maaf secara
formal, mengadukan sesuatu atau sesorang dan bahkan mengatakan cinta. Oleh karen itu, penulis

1 Tujuan dari sebuah Business Letter
Business Letter adalah jenis surat resmi (formal letter) yang berfungsi sebagai cara

Unsur terpenting dari menulis surat yang baik adalah kemampuan penulis mengindentifikasi
untuk siapa surat itu ditujukan. Jika penulis mengrimkan suratnya ke departemen sumberdaya
manusia, hindari penggunaan istilah-istilah tehnik tinggi yang hanya makenik yang bisa
memahaminya.
Unsur selanjutnya adalah yakinkan bahwa tujuan yang dari penulisan surat haruslah jelas dan
ringkas. Jangan buat tujuan dari surat tersebut tidak jelas, kebanyakan orang menulis surat
dengan unsur yang tidak dibutuhkan secara ditail, seharusnya surat ditulis hanya dengan point
yang akan disampaikan tanpa adanya basa-basi yang terlalu.

masing-masing paragrap. Beri jarak antara bagian akhir isi dengan penutup.
7. Closing (Penutup)

C. Bagian – Bagian Penting Dari Business Letter (Part Of Business Letter)


1. Letter Head (Kop Surat)
Merupakan identitas yang berisi logo, nama, alamat dan telepon dari pengirim surat
2. Reference Line
Di dalam surat berbahasa Inggris biasanya berisi huruf depan nama eksekutif yang
menandatangani surat tersebut, diikuti dengan garis miring atau titik dua, lalu nama pengetik
surat. Beberapa perusahaan menambahkan kode atau nomor tertentu berdasarkan sistem arsip
mereka. Reference diletakkan dibagian atas surat di atas date.

3. Date Line ( Tanggal )
Ini adalah bagian tanggal pembuatan surat. Sedangkan format penulisan tanggal adalah

Format penulisan British Style hampir sama dengan penulisan dalam Bahasa Indonesia hanya
saja pada tanggal ditambahkan akhiran bilangan bertingkat. Posisi date pada British Style
ditempatkan di sebelah kanan atas surat.

Penulisan date menggunakan American Style ditempatkan di sebelah kiri atas surat dengan

4. Inside Address

Surat bisnis adalah komunikasi formal antara kertas, atau bisnis dan biasanya dikirim melalui
Kantor Pos atau kadang-kadang oleh kurir. Surat bisnis kadang-kadang disebut “mail” (sebagai
lawan dari e-mail yang lebih cepat). Adapun sebuah surat memiliki bagian-bagian yakni :

Ada terdapat dua gaya penulisan surat bisnis yang berlaku umum, yaitu :

Gaya Penulisan tanggal British style sama dengan gaya penulisan tanggal pada gaya Bahasa
Indonesia. Hanya saja pada British style ditambahakan akhiran bilangan bertingkat seperti 1st,
2nd, 3rd, dst. Posisi tanggal terletak di kanan atas surat.
2. American style

Gaya penulisan tanggal American style nama bulan ditempatkan di posisi awal disusul
tanggal diakhiri tanda koma dan tahun. Posisi tanggal terletak di kiri atas surat.
a. Inside Addres (alamat yang dituju)
Berisikan nama dan alamat yang dituju, terletak di bagian kiri atas sebuah surat. Biasanya dalam
penulisan Inside Address selain nama dan alamat penerima, disertakan juga nama lengkap
beserta jabatannya serta kodepos dan Negara yang dituju.
b. Salutation (salam pembuka)
Salam pembuka terletak di bawah alamat dan sebelum isi surat. berfungsi sebagai salam
pembuka atau tanda hormat penulis. Salam pembuka dituliskan di sebelah kiri. Huruf pertama
awal kata ditulis huruf kapital, sedangkan kata yang lain ditulis huruf kecil semua. Ada dua jenis
salam pembuka dalam penulisan surat yaitu British style, dan American style.

c. Body of the Letter (isi surat)
Isi surat merupakan bagian dari pokok surat berisi pesan atau informasi yang penulis ingin
sampaikan secara detail. Pesan yang tertulis dalam surat haruslah jelas dan langsung pada pokok
permasalahan yang akan dibahas.
d. Complimentary Close (salam penutup)
Salam penutup dari sebuah isi surat berfungsi untuk menunjukkan rasa hormat penulis. Huruf
awal kata salam penutup ditulis dengan huruf kapital, sedangkan kata yang lainnya ditulis
dengan huruf kecil. Sesudah salam penutup dibubuhkan tanda koma. Salam penutup biasanya
berupa kalimat “Yours Faithfully”, ”Yours Truly”, “Yours Sincerely”. Salam penutup dibagi
menjadi dua tipe yaitu Britsh style dan American style.

e. Signature and Writer’s Identification (tanda tangan dan nama penulis)
Berupa tanda tangan penulis terletak pada sisi kanan bawah pembaca surat., beserta nama jelas
penulis surat. Dicantumkan di bawah tanda tangan dengan huruf awal ditulis dengan huruf
capital, tanpa diberi tanda kurung.

(JOB APPLICATION LETTER)

Apa yang harus kita lakukan jika kita ingin melayangkan surat lamaran kerja kepada suatu instansi
atau perusahaan asing atau dalam negeri dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris? Ada terdapat tiga unsur
penting dalam surat lamaran pekerjaan (job application letter), yaitu Introduction, Body dan
Conclusion. Introduction (pengenalan), di bagian ini, anda harus menuliskan posisi anda bahwa
tertarik pada pekerjaan tersebut dan alasan anda mengapa anda menulis surat lamaran pekerjaan
tersebut. Anda juga harus menuliskan bagaimana anda mendapatkan info mengenai pekerjaan tersebut.
Setelah menulis bagian introduction (pengenalan), bagian selanjutnya adalah menulis body (isi) surat
lamaran pekerjaan. Pada bagian body (isi) surat lamaran pekerjaan, anda harus menjelaskan keahlian
dan pengalaman kerja yang anda miliki. Pilih keahlian dan pengalaman yang sesuai dengan pekerjaan
yang anda inginkan. Anda juga bisa menuliskan riwayat pendidikan anda. Ingat tulis secara jelas

Penulisan setiap tanggal memiliki format masing-masing sesuai dengan tujuan penggunaannya.
Hal ini didasarkan atas formlitasnya, kesopanannya, serta tujuan nya. Nah untuk keterangannya

 Format A
Format A digunakan untuk penulisan tanggal pada bagian yang sangat formal. Biasanya
digunakan untuk surat undangan, surat resmi, dll.
 Format B&C
Format ini adalah format yang paling banyak digunakan. Tahukah anda, sebenaranya format
ini merupakan format yang tidak terlalu formal. Jadi jika kalian menulis surat resmi
