Hydraulics Quiz #6

Instruction: Select the correct answer for each of the following questions. Mark only one answer for
each item. STRICTLY NO ERAUSRES ALLOWED.

Problem 01. A circular gate of radius r = 100 mm is vertically submerged in water with its top edge
flushed on a liquid surface.

A. Evaluate the total force acting on one side of the gate in Newton’s. (30.82 N)
B. Obtain the location of the force from the center of gravity of the plate in mm (25 mm)
C. Obtain the location of the force from the liquid surface in mm. (125 mm)

Problem 02. At any point in a fluid at rest, the pressure is the same in all directions. (Pascal Law)

Problem 03. A liquid is discharged from a container through a circular orifice having a diameter of
10 mm that is located h meters from the liquid surface to the center of the orifice.

A. If the container is open to the atmosphere, obtain the theoretical discharge through the
orifice in liters/sec when h = 9. (1.04 liters / sec.)
B. Repeat the previous question if the container is moving upward at acceleration half that
of gravity. (1.28 liters / sec)
C. Repeat the first question if the coefficient of velocity is 0.95 and the coefficient of
contraction is 0.65 for the orifice. (0.644 liters / sec)

Problem 04. A U-tube with both ends open to the atmosphere contains mercury in the lower
portion. In one leg, water stands 760 mm above the surface of the mercury in other
leg, oil (sp.gr. = 0.80) stands 450 mm above the surface of the mercury. What is the
difference in elevation between the surfaces of the oil and water columns? (281 mm)

Problem 05. An open rectangular tank mounted on a moving vehicle is 6 m long, 2 m wide and 3
m high is filled with water to a depth of 2.5 m.

A. What is the maximum horizontal acceleration in m/sec^2 can be imposed on the tank
without spilling any water? (1.64 m/s^2)
B. Determine the accelerating force on the liquid mass. (49.2 kN)
C. If the acceleration is increased to 6 m/sec^2. How much water is spilled out? (15.3 cu.m)
