An independent expert evaluation of 2007-2013 funding found that Cohesion Policy investments had
positive, tangible results ranging from job creation, a positive impact on regional disparities and an
increase in GDP.

Every region and country in the EU benefits from Cohesion Policy, via the direct effects of the investments and/or
the indirect effects like increased trade.

COHESION POLICY IN 2017-2013: CONCRETE RESULTS FOR BULGARIA

Between 2007 and 2013, support from the European Regional Development
Fund and the Cohesion Fund amounted to EUR 5.4 billion in Bulgaria.
Investments were mainly made in the areas of:

 Environment
 Transport infrastructure
 Enterprise support
 Research and Innovation

FIRMS
6 000 jobs were created

Key achievements of
Cohesion Policy
investments in TRANSPORT
BULGARIA 1 040 km of existing roads were upgraded

234 km of existing railways were upgraded, including TEN-T

Nationally important strategic transport links were funded

RESEARCH & INNOVATION


More than 70 research projects were supported
resulting in 244 new jobs

Around 40 cooperation projects between


enterprises and research institutes set up
