1) The document describes the steps taken to create a balancing surfer man sculpture using various tools, including cutting metal with a plasma cutter, smoothing with a disk sander and drill press, welding pieces together, cutting wood with a miter saw, and using a lathe.
2) Key steps involve drawing a shape on metal, cutting it out safely, sanding edges, drilling holes, cutting and bending metal rods for the figure's body, welding pieces together, cutting wood for the base, and drilling a hole in the base to complete assembly.
3) Safety practices like wearing protective equipment and getting instruction from teachers are emphasized throughout the multi-step creative and technical process.

Balancing Surfer Man
By: Prabjot Basra
Plasma Cutter When I, first began I started off by finding the right piece of metal and used a sharpie to draw out my shape. Once I was done, I got help and used the plasma cutter to cut out my piece and to get rid of the excess waste. I had the help of the teacher to help me cut the piece out and use the machine safely. Disk Cutter & Sander • After cutting my piece out, I proceeded to use the disk cutter to cut off excess side and smooth out my piece. After using the disk sander to make my piece look more of like a snowboard. Then I, used the disk sander to smooth out the flat side of my piece. You want to sand the board a bit and make sure your width is 1 and 1/8 in. Drill Press • Once you are done sanding, then you move onto to drill your 3 holes. Try to make your middle hole as precise as possible. Also you first want to get a 1/8 drill bit then attach it to the drill press then adjust the table and clamp it in. Then you put on lube on the spot you are about to drill so that the drill bit does not get damaged. Go slowly and take your time and make sure the drill bit does not hit the clamp which can damage the drill bit and keep an eye on when the drill bit has fully made a breakthrough. Then pull back the drill and turn it off. Clean off and mess and put back everything in its place. Getting all the • Once you are done drilling you need to get a steel rod form the teacher which is 1/8 wide and 10 pieces assembled inches long. For my project, I used scrap pieces from previous projects and cut them up and used those pieces for my project. I first worked on the surfer mans legs and bent it and filed it so that it would fit on the two outer holes. Once I was done that, I worked on the arms for the man and I cut off excess steel that I did not need. Then I bended the arms a bit and filed it and was done. Finally for the torso, I cut off a little piece of the steel rod and filed it to make it perfect. The length for the arms, torso, and legs depend on your surfer board and everyone has different sizes to perfect their project. Also I used steel rod that was old and from older projects and I cut that up and used that for my arms, legs, and the torso. Welding • Once you get all of your pieces together you are going to weld everything together. Make sure to get some practice on how to weld before you start to weld your surfer man. Then weld all the pieces together and make sure witht the teacher and follow his/her instructions to ensure there are minimal mistakes. Grind off any excess on the sides and try your best to make your surfer man perfect. For the base we are using wood instead of metal. We already Base have wood that we can use and make sure to wear hearing protection and eye protection. We are using the mitter saw and make sure to get a proper lesson form the teacher. For my piece, I first used the pre made wood block to support my piece which is called the mitter saw stopper. I brought the blade down and measured 4 and half inches with a ruler from the mitter saw blocker to the blade. Once you are done then clamp that exact position in and then bring the blade back up. Make sure to clamp in the blade as it moves back and forth if you do not clamp it in. Then slowly push the piece against the mitter saw stopper and put your hand on the metal and other hand on the trigger. Turn on the vacuum and then bring down the blade slowly pushing through the wood. Once you get through the wood stop the blade. If you bring it up as the blade is running it can ruin your piece. Bring the blade back up and turn off the vacuum and you are finished. Next you can use tape and find the exact middle to drill a hole in it using the drill or drill press. Steel Rod • You get the stee rod that is already provided and cut 4.5 inches using this machine. Then get the philer and smooth out the ends and make sure is it neatly done. The rod is going to be used for balancing the surfer man. Lathe • Once we are done using the philer we get our piece checked and operate the lathe in front of the teacher and make sure to clamp in the piece tightly. Drill in slowly and make a small dent in the piece and turn off the machine once you are done. Assembly • Once we are done we assemble everything together and come up with our final product.
