"Achieving your Goal Again" by Nelly

When you accept a challenge, see it through. If I have to illustrate my story I

would like to choose the following aspect of my life: I completed my studies in my
native country but when I moved to Canada I had to start studying again. Don't
get me wrong, I have always enjoyed studying. I was an eminent student; to
complete my education I spent twenty years at school. Yes, I spent twenty years
in classrooms reading many books, doing tons of homework, and writing lots of
exams. High school diploma, theological seminars, hair dresser's certificate,
Nursing diploma... all of these I thought would help me to have a good life! It
wasn't like that! Things were going from bad to worse.

I started my nursing career in the post-communist era in Romania. I became a

nurse in my small home town. Being a nurse was my dream; I loved my job! I
bandaged many wounds, I wiped many tears, and I gave many injections;
everybody respected me.

Even though I was pleased with my accomplishments, my job did not provide a
decent existence for me and my family. My husband had two jobs and I had to
supplement my nurse's salary with extra work as well. After our day-job my
husband and I had to go into the fields and grow crops. We could not afford to buy
fresh vegetables. Everything was very pricey. We had to live from one pay-cheque
to the next: no holidays, no vacations, no nothing!

Our life became unbearable; we did not want to live like that anymore. My
husband told me: "It is enough, let's go somewhere far away and look for a better
future for our children!" And we did.

Here we are in Canada. We enjoy living in our new country but to get a good job
and to have a respected profession we have to go to school again. It is a
compromise. I can tell you that going to school is fun, but having to go to school
to study things that you have already studied before is difficult. I want to utilize
my knowledge as a nurse, I want to perform the duties of a nurse, I want to help
people here in Canada, and I want to practice my profession. I wish I could...but...

I decided to go to school again. I wanted to register for the nursing program at

our college but I was told to take upgrading courses. I took all the necessary
courses and now this is my last semester! In September, I will embark on my new
journey and begin talking the LPN program at our local college.

One day I will work as a nurse again. There are other obstacles ahead of me. I
have to be trained to be a nurse in English and I have to get prior learning credits
for the courses I took in my native country. The journey has just begun! It will be
worth it, I hope.

In conclusion, if you have chosen a challenge and have set an expectation, "Don't
wait for your ship to come in... Swim to it!” - Jonathan Winter
