Practical Exercise Using Calendars

Project managers typically know how to use a scheduling software tool such as Primavera or Microsoft
Project, either from a training course, mentoring colleagues, or self-learning. However, despite this
knowledge, many people use incorrect techniques in preparing their schedules. Most of these schedules
contained errors that greatly reduced the schedule accuracy and value. Listed below are the top 10
scheduling mistakes the author has seen in reviewing project schedules for numerous clients over the years.
A more detailed description of each item follows.
1. Lack of scheduling knowledge
2. Inappropriate level of detail
3. Incorrect schedule logic
4. Lack of schedule contingency
5. Presence of “hangers”
6. Constraints misuse
7. Confusing duration and work
8. Linking summary tasks
9. Not using start and complete milestones
10. Not using the project summary task, header, footer, and legend

It is in the AACE's interest that planning and scheduling professional understand how the software works, but,
AACE focus on the fundamentals. After all, if the software inputs are wrong, the results will be wrong. To
answer this problem, you need to know:
Forward Pass
▪ Early Start = Maximum (or Highest) EF value from immediate Predecessor(s)
▪ Early Finish = ES + Duration
Backward Pass
▪ Late Start = LF – Duration
▪ Late Finish = Minimum (or Lowest) LS value from immediate Successor(s)
Float Calculations
▪ Total Float = LS – ES (it is also calculated by LF – EF)
▪ Free Float = Lowest ES of successors – EF

Scope Known about Rock-Filled Dam Project
Given below is the sequence of activity for a dam project which has Construction of Dam, Spillway
construction, powerhouse, Reservoir Impounding, Switchyard Construction, etc. The dam requires river
diversion and work over two or more rainy seasons. The contract is a lump sum, competitively bid, and will
be self-performed. The owner has attempted to shift all risk to the contractor by employing "No differing site
conditions" and "No damage for delay" clauses. There is a bonus/penalty provision of $2,500 per calendar
day for early or late delivery. The early completion bonus is capped at $500,000, with no cap on a late delivery
penalty.

Liquidated damages end at the finish of demobilization. Indirect costs per calendar day are $2,800 for the
"normal" schedule and $3,200 for the "crashed" schedule. The winter/wet weather season is 161 days
between October 15 and March 25 of each year, which reduces the efficiency of the contractor's operations
by 20%, and costs the contractor $10,000 per day. Assume a start date of January 02, 2023, and use a 6-
day work week; Sunday is off.
