Liquid Inhalation Agents

Inhalation anesthetic agents are medications used primarily in operating rooms to provide general anesthesia. They work in the central nervous system by increasing signals to GABA and potassium channels while depressing neurotransmission pathways. Common inhalation agents include nitrous oxide, isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane. Each has their own onset/offset times, side effects like increased/decreased respiration and blood pressure, benefits for fast recovery, and contraindications for patients with lung or liver issues. The dose of liquid inhalation agents depends on their minimum alveolar concentration and volume percentage.

Inhalation Anesthetic

Mohamed
Inhalation anesthetic agents are medications
primarily used in the operating room to provide
general anesthesia for surgery.
In this presentation we will learn the MOA, Type of
Anesthetic agent , side e ects , bene ts , clinical
uses and contradiction .
Mechanism of Action

Work within the central nervous

system by increase signals to chloride
channels (GABA receptors) and
potassium channels while depressing
neurotransmission pathways
Types of liquid
inhalation agents

N2O ISOFLURANE SEVOFLURANE DESFLURANE

ISOFLURANE

A common used inhalation

liquid Anesthetic with rapid
onset and o set time

SIDE EFFECTS
Respiratory rate and PaCO2 are
increased.
Bronchodilation , Tachycardia ,
vasodilation, Minimal increase in CBF.
SEVOFLURANE

Inhalation liquid Anesthetic

that has a mild odor and is
less irritating to the
airways

SIDE EFFECTS
Good muscle relaxant
Fall ventilation
Rise in PaCO2
Fast acting induction
DESFLURANE

Inhalation liquid anaesthetic

that is particularly useful for
patients who need rapid
emergency from anaesthesia
and a fast recovery time
SIDE EFFECTS
coughing
breath holding
Rise in PaCO2
Fall ventilation
Tachycardia
Nitrous oxide
A colourless and odourless inhalation
liquid anesthetic that is used in
combination with other anaesthetics
In dental procedures and minor
surgeries

SIDE EFFECTS
Weak anesthetic, good analgesic ,laughing gas ,
tachypnea , increasing CBF and cerebral blood
volume, laryngospasm ,megaloblastic anemia
Bene ts
Advantages Over Other Forms of anesthesia:
provide a quicker and smoother recovery time while
reducing the risk of excessive blood loss.

Ease of Administration and Control:

fast onset time, which makes it easier to control the level of
anesthesia during the procedure while reducing the risk of an
overdose. This ensures the patient's safety during surgery

Reduced Post-Operative Pain and Nausea:

Inhalation liquid anesthetics are known to reduce or
eliminate post-operative pain and nausea experienced
by patients during their recovery period
Contradiction.
Inhalation liquid anesthetics are not
recommended for patients who su er
from certain health conditions such
as asthma, lung problems, or liver
disease.
Recommend doses

Dose of liquid inhalation agent

depends on the MAC and volume
percent
