GENDER STUDIES IN PAKISTAN
INTRODUCTION : The origins of gender studies can be traced back to the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The feminist movement during period played a pivotal role in challenging traditional notions of gender
roles and inspiring the development of academic disciplines focused on gender. Gender studies in
Pakistan gained prominence in the late 20th century. The field began to take shape in academic
institutions during the 1980s and 1990s, with a growing awareness of gender issues and the need for
scholarly exploration of gender dynamics in Pakistani society.
Women and gender studies and women studies at Allama iqbal university:
Department of Gender & Women Studies was established in the year 1998. Ministry of women
development was funding the department. Was given to people about a gender issues. Department of
Gender & Women Studies is offering four years BS Gender & Women Studies program, one year Post
Graduate Diploma Program and two Years Masters program.
Women research and resource center at fatima jinnah women universit, Rawalpindi: The Women
Resource Centre was established in 1999 to sensitize women on gender related issues and to focus upon
the enhancement of education and employment opportunities for the students. In 2000, the center was
renamed Women Research and Resource Centre (WRRC) to emphasize research on gender and social
issues as also to reflect the academic and professional development of women in general and within the
context of our society in particular.
Institute of Gender Studies, University of Sindh Jamshoro: The Institute of Gender Studies, University
of Sindh, Jamshoro was established in 1994, since that day, it has contributed to the cause of gender and
development in Sindh province. The Institute has launched postgraduate academic programs in Women
& Gender Studies and in Home Economics and has organized several continuing education programs at
Jamshoro, Hyderabad. Moreover, various programs of short certificate courses have been introduced in
this institute since 2009, the Institute of Gender Studies produces an Annual Research Journal “THE
WOMEN” . Currently offer MA and MPhil.
Center of excellence in gender studies at Quaid e Azam university, Islamabad: The Centre of Excellence
in Gender Studies (CEGS) has been established under the Centre of Excellence Act on 31st August 2004
to promote Gender Studies as a learning discipline in Pakistan. Further The Centre offers M.Phil. and
M.Sc. in Gender Studies.
Centre of excellence for women studies program at Karachi University: The centre was established as a
project in 1989 by the Ministry of Women Development, Government of Pakistan. The first M.A in
Women’s Studies in Pakistan began in 1996 at the University of Karachi. In 2002 Centre initiated M.Phil /
Ph.D program. From 2004 the discipline of Women’s Studies was introduced as a subsidiary course at
First Year (Hons.) level. From January 2007 BS (Hons.) 4 years program was launched and from January
2010 M.A (Evening) program has also started.
Gender development studies Balochistan: Established in 1989 . Gender & Development Studies aims at
creating gender awareness and recognizing women's lived experiences and ambitions by placing them at
the centre of social inquiry.
Department of general studies in Punjab University: This department was established in 2001 as the
pioneer in the subject in Pakistan. It aims at preparing a catalyst mass of properly educated
professionals who can devise and actively engage in sustainable gender development activities. Offers
master’s programme.
Gender and development studies in Lahore University: The Gender and Development Studies
Department at LCWU started functioning in 2004.The major objective of the department, besides
imparting education, is to inculcate awareness, assertiveness, self-confidence, and entrepreneurial zeal
in the students. Offering BS, MSc, m Phil, PhD and various certificate courses.
Gender studies department in jhang university: In 2023, the University of Jhang is going to start the
Gender Studies program through the collaborative efforts of Dr. Amjad Rehman Asghar (Assistant
Professor/ In Charge Department of Gender Studies).
