Lab No. 9

This document provides an overview of a study on the drafting system of a drawing frame. It discusses the objectives of a drawing frame, which are to straighten fibers, improve sliver unevenness through doubling, reduce knots, mix fibers intimately, and remove dirt. It describes the methodology, which involves understanding the machine parts like the creel, feed rollers, drafting rollers, and observing card slivers passing through. The conclusion is that the objectives of the drawing frame were fulfilled in evening out and blending the fibers.

Title:

To study the Drafting System of drawing frame.

Abstract:
In this lab drafting system of drawing frame was observed, different roller arrangement their clothing was
also observed. Drawing is the process to align and blend carded slivers.

Introduction:
Drawing is the operation by which slivers are blended, doubled and leveled. In short staple spinning the
term is only applied to the process at a draw frame. In drawing slivers are elongated when passing through
a group of pair rollers, each pair is moving faster than previous one. This permits combing, drawing and
elongating of several slivers to make them strong and uniform. In most modern worsted drawing sets there
are 3 passages of pin drafting and roving process. [1]
The drafting section of the roving frame may be 3 over 3 or 4 over 4 with or without apron roller
arrangement. Only the 3-over-3 or 4 over 4 rollers with double apron drafting system are still to be found
in modern machines offered by manufacturers. In general, 3/3 drafting system is used, but for higher draft
applications 4/4 drafting system is used. The draft often has limits not only at the upper limit (15 to 20), but
also at lower limit. It is around 5 for cotton and 6 for synthetic fibers. [2]

The draft takes place in roller drafting zones. The fibers are held firmly between the top roller and bottom
roll. If the rolls are rotating and the circumference speed increases from roller pair to roller pair in the
direction of the fiber flow, the fibers are pulled apart or drafted. In discussing the irregularity of textile
materials, such as card slivers through to yarns, the drafting of one material state is applicable to drafting of
the others. It is therefore useful to explain the basic principles of drafting by referring to these different
material forms in a general way, calling them linear fibrous assemblies [2].

Task of Draw frame

 Blending
 Parallelizing
 Equalizing
 Dust removal

Objectives of Draw Frame:

 To straighten the crimped and hooked fibres in the card sliver.
 To improve the short medium and long-term unevenness of the sliver by doubling.
 To reduce the knot/unit length of card sliver.
 To mix the fibre intimately.
 To make the perfect blend of fibre.
 To remove the dirt, dust from carded sliver.

After drawing Before drawing

Methodology:
Open the covers of the drawing machine and understand the working of different parts. Draw a line diagram
of the machine along with the material passage through it and drives of the various organs. Following are
the parts of the drawing machine.
• Creel
• feed rollers
• Drafting rollers
• Cleaning apron
• Funnel
• Calendar Roller
• Trumpet guide
• Coiling Plates

Conclusion:
We have performed the whole practical and concluded that all the objectives have been fulfilled on the
machines we used. Carded silver were draft was observed.
