Calculation procedure for stiffness:
‘eavy loads wll deform the shafts excessively, impairing the
normal working of gears and bearings. This results in non-uniform
load distribution between the gears leading 10 concentration of
pressure at the edges. Calculation for stiffness necessitates
calculation of shaft deflection and slope due to bending. Formulae
for slope and deflection of the commonly encountered cases are
piven in pages 71 - 82
IC two or more loads are acting, then the principle of
superposition may be usedto get the resultant slope anddeflecton.
For stepped shafts, the deflection may be caleulated by any of
the following methods:
‘) Macauley’s method
) Arca-moment method
+) Conjugate beam method
‘8) Castigiano’s method
©) Graphical integration method
‘An example of ealeulation of deflection of astepped shat using
the area moment method is giver below

Permissible values of deflection, slope and angle of twist which
are generally adopted in machine :00l design practice areas follows:
1) - Maximum deflection of shaft not to exceed 2 10°* times the
Span between bearings,
2). Deflection of shaft in microns under the gear not to exceed 10
times the module of gear.
43). Slope of the shaft where gears mounted, nottoexceed 1 x10"?
radian
44) The angle of twist should not exceed 0.25*to 0.35? per metre
length of shat.
5), Maximum slope of shaft at bearings is limited by the
permissible misalignment of bearings. Permissible misalignment of
folling bearings is dependent upon type of bearing, internal
learance of bearing during, operation. bearing size, its internal
