FLAT BELTS The main difference between flat belts and other belts is that flat belts can provide a greater reduction ratio (20:1 and above) and operate under high speeds (about SOm/sec.). Most efficient transmission is obtained at a speed range of 17.5 to 22.Smisec. Beyond a speed of 30m/sec., there will be an excessive belt slip. Flat belts are used for power transmission between two or more parallel or skewed shafts, where a slight variation in transmission ratio is tolerable. Flat belts can also be used in crossed belt drives. Wherever possible pulley diameters larger than the recommended minimum should be used. . Leather, rubber, fabric and nylon cored chrome leather are some of the materials normally used for the manufacture of belts. Nylon cored chrome leather belts (also known as sandwiched belts) have a higher power transmission capacity due to their high coefficient of friction. The belts also possess excelient resistance to climatic conditions. For power ratings and other design parameters manufacturers catalogues. may be referred.
