 Introduction

A broader horizon awaits as we continue on your nursing journey. An essential

knowledge that needs to be obtained is the continuation of your community health
nursing which now focuses on concepts, principles, theories and techniques in the care
of population groups and communities utilizing community organizing strategies toward
health promotion, disease prevention, restoration and maintenance, and rehabilitation
and community development.

The tasks are made simple and were selected to make sure that independent
learning will occur. To learn most from this module, do not forget to read the specific
topic on your resource book. Take the pretest as this will determine how much time you
will need in each lesson. Make sure to answer the activities given for every lesson so
you can check your progress. Accomplish the post-test so you could identify how much
you have learned

In this lesson you will learn about the personal attributes and the professional
competencies a Filipino nurse must possess.

 Title of the Lesson: Personal Attributes (Lesson 1)

Filipino nurses possess qualities and attributes that get the job done in an
effective and efficient manner, prioritize client’s safety and provide altruistic tender
loving care making them one of the most in demand workers and tagged as one of the
best in the world.

Amazing Filipino attributes include:

1. CARING- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on treating patients correctly, in a

respectful and non-judgmental manner with considerations that should be
paid to their beliefs and their dignity should be protected at all times and they
should be able to trust their nurse to provide a high level of care.

2. COMPASSIONATE- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on showing kindness

and empathy to others and exhibits consideration for others to help build
motivation.

3. COMPETENT- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on the constant updating of

knowledge and skills in order to keep up to date with the latest practices of
the wide range of needs and treatments that is done through a lot of training
and time spent on personal development to ensure that they possess the
expertise needed to care for every single patient to a high standard.

4. COMMUNICATOR- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on conveying

messages from one entity to another through the use of mutually understood
language facilitated by verbal and non-verbal concise ways.

5. COURAGEOUS- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on being accountable for

their actions as a nurse and that they have a duty of care to their patients
while fighting for what they think is right, brave enough to confront fear of
difficulties and standing to what they believe, even if others do not like it.

6. COMMITTED- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on valuing the quality of

being dedicated to an activity by doing exceptional effort especially putting in
the overtime in order to make sure that their patients' needs are met.

7. INTEGRATED- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on encouraging,

demonstrating consistently expected organizational principles of open
communication, ethical decision-making, and humility.

8. DIVERSIFIED- is a Filipino attribute that focuses on embracing the culture

that encompasses many identities, influenced by the intersections of race,
ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical
abilities, religious and political beliefs, or other ideologies.

and living in a life with prayer which encompasses healing which is the goal of
all healthcare providers.

 Title of the Lesson: Professional Competencies (Lesson 2)
The National Nursing Core Competencies of 2012 includes the three major roles
of a professional nurse. As a nurse generalist, they can assume the following roles on:

1. CLIENT CARE- is a core competency that assumes the role to utilize the nursing
process in the care of mothers, newborns, children, adolescents, adults and older
persons; family, community, population groups, and persons with special needs.

2. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT- is a core competency that assumes the

role to serve as managers and leaders of nursing service units and health
services and programs

3. RESEARCHER- is a core competency that assumes the role in engaging in

nursing and health related research, evaluates research studies and applied
research process in improving client care.

Furthermore, the following specific competencies shall be expected to be

exhibited among Bachelor of Science Nursing Students:

a. Apply knowledge of physical, social, natural, and health sciences, and

humanities in the practice of nursing.

b. Provide safe, appropriate, and holistic care to individuals, families, population

group, and community utilizing nursing process.

c. Apply guidelines and principles of evidence-based practice in the delivery of

care.

d. Practice nursing in accordance with existing laws, legal, ethical, and moral
principles.

e. Communicate effectively in speaking, writing, and presenting using culturally-

appropriate language.

f. Document to include reporting up-to-date client care accurately and

comprehensively.

g. Work effectively in collaboration with inter-, intra-, and multi-disciplinary and

multi-cultural teams.

h. Practice beginning management and leadership skills in the delivery of client

care using a systems approach.

i. Conduct research with an experienced researcher.
