CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Online safety (also known as internet safety, e-safety, and cyber
safety) is the state of being
aware of many risks associated with internet use. In this context,
“online safety” refers to the
practice of utilizing all available resources, from desktop computers to
mobile devices, to ensure
privacy and security while surfing the internet (National Online Safety,
2017). People in this
generation are engaged with the use of different social media
platforms for various purposes
such as entertainment, work, education, etc. Most of the social media
platforms like Facebook,
which is one of the most common social media platforms in the
Philippines, requires its user to
provide private information including their name, birthday, email
address, and photos, for the
users to create an account. There are numerous hazards connected
with accessing the internet,
such as hacking, and other security breaches, identity theft, invasion of
privacy, damage to one’s
online reputation, and the presence of unlawful or hazardous content.
Internet is an excellent
tool for locating any type of information, but it also poses significant
security risks. Everyone who
uses the internet should take precautions to secure their personal
information and reduce the
probability of dangerous technical interactions.
Data privacy covers the appropriate handling of sensitive data,
particularly personal data; it is
often referred to as data privacy or information privacy. As internet
usage has grown over time,
the importance of data privacy and online safety has increased.
According to DATAREPORTAL,
there are 76.01 million internet users in the Philippines and 13.8% of
these users are teenagers.
Filipinos consume more data than any other country in the region. On
average, consuming more
than 10 hours per day (Statista, 2020). Some platforms and application
may go beyond what consumers had anticipated in terms of data
collection and use, offering them less privacy than
they have intended. Other platforms and apps may not employ sufficient
safeguards for the data
they collect, which may result in a data breach that compromises user privacy.
As teenagers engage themselves in different social media platforms, they
become at high risk of
oversharing their personal data on the internet. With little to no awareness on
the risk associated
with data privacy and online safety, they can easily fall into unconsciously
sharing their private
information online. Being at risk of different threats such as identity theft,
stalking, and phishing.
In addition, the rapid use of technology in various countries has not also been
accompanied by
awareness of online security (Abror et al, 2021). Therefore, assessing their level
of awareness
can help us have an overview of the current situation using statistical data and
help in finding
solutions to lessen and prevent the occurrence of various online threats. There
is an inadequate
amount of information about the awareness of the students on this subject, and
we need to
know this to properly assess the problem and to see the best way to find a
solution to this
growing problem.
This research is important and needed as the evolution of technology in the
Philippines has been
seen to be drastically improving. Filipinos were ranked as one of the most active
social media
users, and somehow they became incautious for sharing too much information
about themselves
over the internet. Additionally, about 4.59 million incidents of data breaches had
been reported in
the Philippines (Statista, 2022). Because of this, the researchers became
interested to investigate
the topic. The goal of this research is to assess the awareness of students if
they have enough
knowledge to become responsible online users for preventing online threats that
can affect their
lives while using different social media platforms.
