NATURAL HAZARDS -
WHAT IS A NATURAL HAZARD ? -
Here are some different meanings -
A natural hazard is a natural event that can cause social and
economic impacts.
A disaster that happens in nature or by natural process.
NOTE -
*not all natural disasters are the result of weather. For
example a Pandemic
EXAMPLE OF NATURAL HAZARDS -
● Earthquakes
● Volcanoes
● Tropical storms
● Droughts
● Heatwaves
● Tornadoes
● Flooding
● Wildfire
● Blizzard
● Hurricane
● Thunderstorm
● Tsunami
2 HAZARD CATEGORIES -
WEATHER HAZARDS -
Climate hazards or atmospheric hazards
GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS -
Tectonic hazards
Learning about natural disasters can also help us prepare for
them.
BLIZZARDS -
Blizzards are long snowstorms with high winds for 3 or more
hours. They are caused by cold air colliding with warm air.
DROUGHTS -
Droughts are caused by lack of rain over a long period of time.
Human activity like deforestation can lead to droughts.
EARTHQUAKES -
Earthquakes happen when the earth is quaking which means
shaking. Earthquakes are caused by sudden violent movement of
the earth’s crust.
Magnitude = strength
FLOODS -
Floods happen when there's heavy rain or melting ice or snow
that overflow rivers and other bodies of water which then floods
an area of dry land.
HEAT WAVE -
A heat wave is when the temperature is higher than normal in a
region which happens when high pressure in the earth's
atmosphere builds up and holds hot air on the earth’s surface
this decreases the chance of rain.
HURRICANES -
Hurricanes are giant swirling storms accompanied by severe
thunderstorms and high winds up to 160 miles per hour.
NOTE -
*hurricanes are also known as typhoons
THUNDERSTORMS -
Thunderstorms include lightning, high winds, and usually heavy
rain. Sometimes a thunderstorm might have hail, sleet, or snow
instead. These storms happen when there is a surge of warm,
humid air.
TORNADOES -
Tornadoes are a destructive column of air wind speeds from 100
to 300 miles per hour. There are also many shapes and sizes, but
most look like a funnel when they rotate. Tornadoes can occur
over land or sea
TSUNAMIS -
Tsunami’s are giant water waves that make regular big ocean
waves look tiny. These giant waves surge onto land and can reach
heights up to 100 feet. Tsunamis mostly occur in oceans, but
sometimes it can occur in lakes. Tsunamis are caused by
underwater earthquakes. The vibrations cause a disruption in the
water which causes the huge powerful wave.
WILDFIRES -
Wildfires are also called bush fires. Wildfires are very
dangerous and unpredictable. Wildfires include forests, bush, or
brush fires. Wildfires are mostly started by humans or dry
weather. Strong winds can also cause spreading.
