FITNESS TEST (BPFT) History. The Brockport Physical Fitness Test (BPFT) is a health related physical fitness test, which is appropriate for use among youngsters with disabilities. In 1993, the U.S. Department of Education funded some research which was named “Project Target”. This research study was designed primarily to develop a health related and critetion-referenced physical fitness test. Theage group of this research study was between 10 and 17 years of age. In this study, 1542 youngsters with and without disabilities were tested. The analysis of results of this study lead to the creation of Brockport Physical Fitness Test. A key element of the project was to develop standards that would provide targets for attaining health- related physical fitness. This test was designed for both able bodied youngsters and those with disabilities such as mental retardation, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, blindness, congenital anomalies and amputations. In revised, BPFT, the term “mental retardation” has been replaced by intellectual disability. Test. The Brockport Physical Fitness Test includes 27 test items but usually, only’4 to 6 items are required in order to assess the health-related physical fitness of a particular individual. There are following components and test items for Brockport Physical Fitness Test [BPFT] A. AEROBIC FUNCTION (i) 20-m PACER (Gi) Modified 15-m PACER Target Aerobic Movement test (TAMT) (iv) One-mile run/walk ° 2, BROCKPORT PHYSICAL (i B. A. Aerobic Function (i) One-mile run/walk Procedure. In one-mile run/walk test, participants run/walk one-mile i.e, 1609 meters in the minimum time This testi used to measute the aerobic capacity of participants. All the participants should be instructed to ru or walk one-mile at the fastest pace possible. Aerobic Capacity is not calculated on the b i 7 stthe gne-mile run/walk for time over 13 minutes Ifa particinant’s time is less than 13 minutes, the tester should receed and save the time as a measure of aerob Tine for the comparison in future administrations of the test. If the patticipants//students are not able to run/walk one-mile test in jess than 13 minutes, the tester may choose lo give the target aerabic movement test (TAMT) or 20-m PACER or Modified One mie runtalk 15m PACER. Test Modifications. Those participants, who are blind, they may, run/walk with the help of partner. The assistance can involve using a short tether rope, touching or grasping the elbows of a sighted partner. Even ‘sighted partner can give verbal direction and encouragement to the runner by running, alongside with the participant. Suggestions for Test Administration. and clipboard are required to conduct one-mile run/walk test functioning and a baseline (i) The participants should be provided practice as necessary for the required distance before the day of testing, (ji) Participants should get warmed up properly before the beginning of the test. Stretching exercises should be included in warming up. (ii) [tis recommended that youngsters should not be tested in such environments where the temperature or humidity is excessive. (iv) After the completion of the test, participants should be given time to cool down by walking for several minutes. (ii) 20-m or 15-m PACER test Inthe PACER, participants run back and forth across a distance of either 15 meters or 20 meters at a specified pace. . (iii) Target Aerobic Movement Test itis used to test the ability to sustain a moderate intensity of any physical activity by maintaining a heart rate between 70 and 85 percent or maximal predicted heart rate for 15 minutes. B, Body Composition ( Body Mass Index (BMD) Purpose. Body Mass Index reflects fat, muscle anu! bone mass and indicates the appropriateness of an individual's weight for his/her height. Therefore, in order to compute BMI, height and weight must be determined Equipment. A weighing scale and a stadiometer is usally required. I stadiometer isnot available a marked wallor tape measure can be used to determine height or body length. Participants may eon a mat to determine body height if they are unable to support their weight in standing position. Scoring, Participants should wear lightwelg! rounded to the nearest half inch (whole centimeter) and weight to the ni BMI of any individual can be calculated with the help of the following formula / Body weight Body Mass Index (BMD = ( Hei ght x Height ht clothing, and remove shoes when possible. Initially height can be st half kilogram. Here, the weight of an individual is measured in kilograms and the height of that student is taken in metres. Test Modifications. The height of a participant who wears prosthetic devices or braces should be taken while Brockport Physical Fitness Test (PFT) 13 @ scanned with OKEN Scanner he or she wears the items, Participants who are unable to support their body weight in a standing position cq y length is measured with a tape meastre, Ifthe participant with cerebral pal stand erect, the tester body segments (i, floor fo knee, knee to hip to he: the segments to determine body length for the purpose of calculating BML The weight of a participant who wears prosthetic device or braces is taken with items removed or subtracting the weight ofthe item. The weight of a participant who uses a wheelchair can be determined either, taking the participant out of the wheelchair or by weighing the participant inthe wheelchair and then subtracting the weight ofthe wheelchair. Participants with amputation or congenital anomaly can be weighed but care must be taken when making comparisons with other people or calculating BML. When estimating the weigh participant with leg amputation, add 1/8 of body weight for a below-knee amputation, 1/9 of body an above-knee amputation and 1/6 of body weight for a hip amputation Suggestions for Test Administration. The test may be waived if determination of either height or weight a safety problem to the participant or the tester; if valid measurement is not taken due to disability (ii) Skinfold Measures. Purpose, Skinfold tests determine the thickness of skin folds at selected sites and can be used to estimate the body fat of participants. Skinfold measurements can be taken at three sites: triceps, subscapular and calf C. Musculo-skeletal Function (a) Muscular strength and Endurance Curl-Up Procedure. In curk-up test, participants complete as many curl-ups as possible, up to a maximum of 75 at a rhythm of one curl every 3. — seconds. This test is designed to measure abdominal strength and endurance. The participant starts curl-up by lying ina supine position ‘ona mat. The knees are bent at an angle of approximately 140 degrees, with the feet flat on the floor and the legs slightly apart. The arms should be straight, parallel to the trunk, with palms facing down toward the mat. The fingers should be outstretched. The part is positioned so that the closest edge of a flat measuring strip that is 4.5 inches or about 11.5 cm wide can be touched with the outstretched. fingers. From the starting position, the participant curls-up slowly, sliding the fingers across and to the opposite side of the measuring strip. After that, the participant returns to the starting position, The main factor is. that participants move the fingertips 4.5 inches or 11.5 cm as a part of the curl-up. The participant continues without any pause until he or she either cannot maintain the pace or has completed 75 repetitions lie on a mat while bod! In this test, a gym mat and a measuring strip that is 30 (b) Up position inches by 4.5 inches (76 cm x 11.5 cm). The measuring strip can be held or secured to a supporting surface. Although measuring strips made from cardboard are recommended. Scoring. A participant's score is the number of curl-ups performed accurately. One curl-up is counted for every return to a supine position on the mat. Curl-up should not be counted if the feet completely leave the floor at any time during the movement or if the participant does not reach the required distance or does not return to the starting position, or performs the curl-up in any other incorrect way Test Modifications. Proper motivation should be given to the participant. Itis acceptable to take whatever time is needed to ensure that youngsters know how to perform the test. Suggestions for Test Administration. (i) Encourage a slow curling of the upper spine during the curl-up. !) Encourage controlled and persistent movement. (iii) Ttmay be necessary for an assistant to secure the measuring strip : Gv) A testing assistant can judge whether the participant's head touches the mat on each repetition with this judgment. 14” Saraswati Lab Manual Health & Physical Education-xi! @ scanned with OKEN Scanner Modified Curl-up Procedure.
