INTRODUCTION

This chapter describes the literature within the research area involved in the
internship objectives. The main aim is to provide the foundations and to introduce
the scientific and the technical contributions proposed so far in these fields. The
first section of the chapter presents the literature concerning logistic operators and
the planning parameters for the operational transportation planning. After that, the
Performance Measurements and decision support tools are presented.

Introduction to Logistics Industry

Logistics deals with the planning and control of material flows and related
information in organizations, both in the public and private sectors. Broadly
speaking, its mission is to get the right materials to the right place at the right time,
while optimizing a given performance measure (e.g. minimizing total operating
costs) and satisfying a given set of constraints (e.g. a budget constraint).

As Logistics is important, Warehousing and inventory storage are key

components within both the logistics and supply chains. Used by customs,
transporters, manufacturers, wholesalers and import / export companies they
enable the storage and distribution of raw materials and finished goods, as well as
everything in-between. Choosing the right provider for your warehouse operation
and storage facilities give business the competitive advantage.

Warehousing and the storage of goods play a vital role in the logistics supply
chain across the world. Not only do warehouses provide safe and secure storage
around the clock, they also allow you to have your goods stored in one central
place, which makes planning and organising your logistics that much easier. This
report is done with the knowledge acquired from the DHL - JOCKEY

10
INDUSTRY PROFILE

Logistics in India

Logistics is about moving materials, information and funds from one business to
another business or from a business to the consumer. Logistics is an important part
of the business economic system and is a major global economic activity. It
encompasses activities like freight transportation, warehousing, material handling,
protective packaging, inventory control, order processing, marketing, forecasting
and customer service.

Historically, the logistics sector was clearly separated and restricted mainly to
transportation and warehousing. The logistics management in today’s world
however, covers all the aspects of value chain including an efficient integration of
transportation, distribution, warehousing, reverse logistics, value added services
such as payment collection, packaging, documentation etc. The developments IT in
recent years have further had remarkable implications for the logistics industry.

Major Drivers of Logistics Industry in India

The concept of logistics is continuing to gain strength in India. There are several
major drivers fuelling the growth of the industry.

1. Organizations are realizing the huge potential savings that efficient logistics
can offer, and its impact on revenue growth and improved profitability. Moreover,
the increasing complexity of supply networks, globalization of businesses, and
shortening of product lifecycles forcing them to realize that it is better to allow the
experts to manage their logistics, and this results in acceptance of outsourcing as a
business practice.
11
2. The increasingly demanding customers, coupled with the increasing cost
pressure and competition, there is an urge for companies to differentiate
themselves from their competitors through value added services and competitive
prices. As such, price and time factors, for example on-time delivery, shorter lead
time, improved service and better inventory management become important
criteria in selection of suppliers. Availability of efficient logistics service providers
become an important part of the sourcing equation.

3. The globalization trend in the complex business environment worldwide

also poses great opportunities for the logistics industry in India. Worldwide
companies have started adopting global sourcing and distribution strategies and
have given higher priorities on efficient management of supply chain and logistics.
Such global strategy has significant implication on the growth of Indian logistics
industry.

4. Another major driver of the logistics industry is the internet. With the
emerging ecommerce, there is a need for e-companies to offer an efficient
distribution system that ensures fulfilment and timely delivery of goods ordered
through the internet. Companies are on lookout for the strategic logistics players
who can streamline the movement of their goods and ensure faster delivery. In
addition, with EDI, bar coding and tracking of goods in transit used widely, many
companies are depending on the logistics providers to provide the IT integration.

5. The Indian government’s initiative in improving the infrastructure is a

positive factor for boosting the logistics industry. The simplification of trade rules
and regulations, allowing private sector participation in roads, seaports and
airports, and the increase of public funding in upgrading the infrastructure will
further support the growth the logistics industry in India.

22
FUNCTIONAL AREAS
PICK TO DISPATCH CYCLE

The pick to dispatch cycle typically involves humans picking the correct
product in order, packaging it and dispatching. Picking the right product involves
the warehouse staff going around the facility with totes and a list of items on their
handheld device. These device optimize the route within the warehouse for them,
so they know exactly a product is stored and n what order to fill their bags.

If product is with seller, delivery person brings it to dispatch hub. Then product
specifications are checked against order. Product picked from warehouse is
verified by scanning its details and comparing with the screen grab of the order to
ensure the specifications are accurate. If the product is sourced from a merchant,
delivery person scans the barcode to match the order.

Product is packed and then weighed. Then the product is sorted based o pin
code. Products are sorted into bins based on destination, these bin glow to confirm
that all the products meant for a destination are tallied. The products are then sent
for packing and dispatch.

Product are dispatched based on dimension or distance to the destination hub.

The final coordinates are sent to the handsets of delivery boys. Product is picked
by delivery boys.

FUNCTIONAL AREA WE WORKED IN

OUTBOUND AREA

Here we were mainly assigned to do Quality checking, Picking, Packing, Labelling,

Printing invoice.

23
Outbound

It refers to the process of moving goods along the supply chain until they reach
their final destination. There are typically four stages of outbound logistics
operations: warehousing and storage, distribution, transportation, and last-mile
delivery.

The outbound logistics process guides the flow of inventory across the supply
chain towards the end users. Products are picked up in a warehouse or fulfilment
centre and shipped to buyers, usually with the help of a delivery partner.

Boards on the warehouse floor signal aisles where orders are stored based on the
destination city of each shipment. One of the biggest hubs, this warehouse was
once the only one catering to all the orders originating in South India. Today, DHL
has expanded its supply chain operations, opening large hubs across the country to
get orders delivered faster to customers.

Here, staff on the bustling floor move and pack various orders, racing to meet the
tight delivery schedule of the sale. Timing is often everything during the hectic
sale season.

Every product has a specified slot in the humongous hub floor to ensure that each
order is swiftly located and sent on its way to process before being dispatched. An
employee at the warehouse wheels a trolley through the aisles to pick up one the
orders for processing. Before an order goes on to the dispatch stage, it is
extensively wrapped to minimize all risk of damage on the way to the customer.

Vehicles are kept at the ready to begin the transport phase the moment products are
prepared to dispatch. Trucks are parked close to the Flipkart warehouse doors, so
loading and unloading of orders is smooth and quick. After swift but detailed

24
processing, the orders are sent on their way to eagerly waiting customers. An
employee ensures that every item leaving the DHL - Jockey warehouse is recorded,
as others load it onto a waiting truck outside.

Security is tight across the warehouses, and often heightened during busy times.
All employees and visitors are strictly forbidden from taking in personal
belongings such as bags and mobile phones.

At the end of a long shift, a security personnel documents an empty truck that has
just arrived at the warehouse. Soon, it will be loaded with the next batch of orders
and be on its way to other excited customers.

 Multi racking system

25
 Hand-held device is used

 Material Handling Equipment are used.

28
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, throughout the internship, I have achieved all the objectives of the
internship. I have gone through the process of all the departments of warehouse in
which I have learned a lot about the work culture of the DHL. Their work
processes like loading, unloading, quality check, inward and outward process,
return center are working in a systematic way. The employees are giving their
100% to their work. They use multiple system to process the customer’s order on
time. The management of time is very well maintained. And during the time of
internship, I have noticed that the failure of IT system is the only reason of delay in
work and thus delay in delivery. Every time there was an issue on website or
disconnection of internet, this is the biggest reason of delay in delivery of order.

With this internship, I’ve learned how senior executives manage jobs. And also
how to apply technical expertise in the study field. By executing different tasks
delegated by the supervisor I’ve learned the functioning of warehouse with
practical knowledge. And all together I understood how warehouses are beneficial
in effective working of logistics. And of course, the objectives of the internship is
achieved.
