Objectives: This course introduces the basic concepts in incompressible aerodynam-


ics..

Prerequisites: None. But, a first course in fluid mechanics or aerodynamics is re-


quired.

Course Contents: Introduction to aerodynamics, review of NS eqns, BL approxima-


tions, Atmosphere (ISA) and its stability, dynamic similarity. Aerofoil nomenclature,
forces and moments, Incompressible irrotational flow. Complex potential, Singularities
and superposition, axisymmetric potential flow, Blasius theorem, Method of images.
Circulation, Robins Magnus effect and Kutta-Joukowski theorem, Conformal Mapping
and Joukowski airfoil, Kelvin’s circulation theorem, Thin Airfoil theory, Helmholtz
theorems, Finite wing theory, Low aspect ratio wings and slender body theory, Flow
separation & dynamic stall, Flow control & wing design, Wing flutter.

Evaluation Components & Policies:

• Mid semester - (25%)


• End semester - (30%)
• Quizzes (Announced and Surprise) - (30%)
• Assignments - (15%)

Other Policies:

• Although attendance is not required, students should attend all classes to receive
full benefit of lectures. Students are responsible for all information provided
in lecture. Information presented in class supersedes any information posted
elsewhere.

• Quizzes are closed book. Mid semester and end semester exams are always open
notes. In case, of closed book closed notes you are allowed a one-page crib sheet.

• The course moves quickly and the material in latter lectures builds from the
previous lectures. If you find yourself struggling in the course, it is strongly
encouraged that you come to office hours or seek help with TA well in advance
of exams.

• Please try to submit assignments/homework problem on time. Delayed submis-


sion shall not be assigned any credit.

• Relative grading will be adopted and the grades would be assigned as per institute
policy.
