Grammar point 4 - Adverbial clause of result


Way 1: CLAUSE OF REASON, SO + CLAUSE OF RESULT.
Way 2: CLAUSE OF REASON. THEREFORE, CLAUSE OF RESULT.
Way 3: ... SO + ADJ + THAT + CLAUSE OF RESULT
Way 4: ... SO + ADJ + A/AN + N + THAT + CLAUSE OF RESULT
Way 5: ... SUCH + (A/AN) + ADJ + N + THAT + CLAUSE OF RESULT
Examples:
He is poor. He cannot afford that ring with diamond for her.
==> He is poor, so he cannot afford that ring with diamond for her.
==> He is poor. Therefore, he cannot afford that ring with diamond for her.
==> He is so poor that he cannot afford that ring with diamond for her.
==> He is so poor a man that he cannot afford that ring with diamond for her.

Grammar point 5 - Reported speech


Statements:
- said: “…”  said that.
- said to Sb: “…”  told Sb that. (also “said to Sb that”)
Eg: She said: “I am very happy.”  She said that she was very happy.
She said to me: “I need some water.”  She told me that she needed some
water.
Questions:
- said to Sb: “yes/ no question?”  asked Sb if/ whether…
- said to Sb: “W/H question?”  asked Sb + W/H …
Note: the clause after “if/ whether/” or “W/H” must be affirmative.
Eg: She said to him: “Are you tired?”  She asked him if he was tired.
She said to him: “What can I do for you?”  She asked him what she could do for
him.
Commands:
- said to Sb: “Do St./ Don’t do St.”  told/ asked Sb to do/ not to do St.
Eg: The teacher said to us: “Study hard.”
 The teacher asked/ told us to study hard.
Mr Green said to his son: “Don’t play your beatbox to me.”
 Mr Green told/ asked his son not to play his beatbox to him.
- said to Sb: “__?”  invited/ begged/ requested … Sb to do/ not to do St.
 offered Sb St / offer to do St (for Sb)
Subjunctive:
- suggest (that) Sb should do St. (informal way)
- suggest (that) Sb do St. (very formal way)
Eg: She said to him: “You had better stop dancing.”
 She suggested that he (should) stop dancing.
He said to us: “You ought not to eat much seafood to avoid gout.
 He suggested that seafood not be eaten much so that we could avoid gout.
Conditional sentences:
- Type 1  Type 2:
Eg 1: She said:”If we leave now, we’ll catch the last train.”
She said that if they left then, they would catch the last train.
- Type 2 & Type 3 cannot be changed:
Eg 2: She said: “If I were a bird, I would fly around the world.”
She said that if she were a bird, she would fly around the world.

Practice 5: Rewrite the sentences


1) The clerk said to us,” Don’t come back before one o’clock.”
The clerk told us not to come back before one o’clock.
2) The teacher said to us, “ Write the next two exercises.”
The teacher told us to write the next two exercises.
3) “Turn left at the corner and drive two blocks,” the man said.

4) Susan said to his brother, “Don’t climb up the tree in the school yard.”

Grammar point 6 - Word form identification


Noun phrase = (Adv …) + (Adj …) + Noun
- a/ an/ the + Noun Phrase
- this/ that/ these/ those + Noun Phrase

- Object = Noun Phrase
Eg: This is a beautiful girl. (beauty)
