ROLLOVER PROTECTION SYSTEM. . . . . . . . 541-12

GENERAL
This repair group covers the automatic electrohydraulic convertible
hard top. Information on the rollover protection system is also
included here.

Convertible top basics

The E93 convertible top system opens and closes the top using
hydraulic cylinders and an electrohydraulic pump.

The convertible top system features :

• Convertible top module (CTM) with fault memory storage .
• Electrohydraulic operation.
• Convenience opening I closing using the remote key or driver door
lock cylinder.
• Convenience trunk loading I unloading using remote key.
• Top monitoring using hall sensors and microswitches.
I
Emergency operation
An emergency closing procedure for the consumer is not provided
by the factory due to multiple BMW special tools needed to perform
the procedure. Contact a BMW service facility in the event of
convertible top failure .

Hydraulic fluid level, checking or filling

The convertible top electrohydraulic pump is filled with lifetime fluid.
In the event there is a leak or service is performed and the fluid level
has to be topped off, fill to the mark on oil reservoir. Use Aral Vitamol
fluid available through BMW parts.

Convertible top switch

Convertible top switch

~ The convertible top switch is located in the center console (C). When
the switch is pressed or pulled the top opens or closes. Operation of
the switch is similar to that of the power windows.

- Pushing the switch opens the hardtop; pulling the switch closes it.

- The green LED (A) in the switch lights up while the hardtop is
moving.

- If the switch is released while the hardtop is moving, movement of

the hardtop, the rear module or the side windows stops. The red LED
(B) flashes. Hardtop movement can be resumed by pressing the
switch again . Movement of the side windows can be resumed within
10 seconds.

- If the red LED (B) is lit continuously. One of the convertible top
operating condition have not been met. See Convertible top
operating conditions in this repair group.

Convertible top operating conditions

The convertible top can be opened and closed using the button in
the center console when the following conditions are met:
• Terminal R activated.
• Outside temperature above -12°C (10°F).
• Trunk lid closed.
• Vehicle stationary (driving speed 0 mph) .
• Luggage compartment divider in lowest position.
• Lateral inclination of the vehicle less than 8°.
• Power windows initialized.
• Battery voltage greater than 9.5 V.
• Fewer than five consecutive successive open ing I closing
operations.
• Temperature of the hydraulic fluid.
Opening: maximum gooc (194°F)
Closing: maximum 105°C (221 °F)

Convenience operation
Convenience opening or closing is possible using the remote key or
drivers door lock. A convenience loading I unloading feature can be
used to access luggage compartment when the convertible top is
open .

~ To open convertible top using remote key press and hold unlock
button (arrow). Windows will open first, followed by convertible top.

Convertible top module (CTM)

CONVERTIBLE TOP OPERATION

Convertible top module (CTM)

~ The convertible top module (CTM) is located behind the passenger
rear seat on the right (inset) . It contains the processing, controlling
and monitoring electronics for top operation .

The CTM communicates with the car access system (CAS) , footwell
module (FRM) and door modules for operation of the convertible top.

The CTM is fully self-diagnostics and is capable of monitoring and

storing faults. Fault code access and diagnosis requires a BMW
factory scan tool or equivalent.

Convertible top locking

The roof sections of the convertible top are interlocked when opened
or closed . The convertible top locks into the windshield in two
places. Each roof section locks together.

1. Connecting rod for right catch hook.

2. Right catch hook.
3. Right drive cable .
4. Locking pin for center roof panel to
center right roof panel.
5. Locking pin for center roof panel to right

Convertible top position sensors

Convertible top position sensors

The various positions of the convertible top and the rear module are
monitored with 9 Hall sensors and 5 microswitches. The CTM
monitors these sensors for opening, closing and fault detection .

..;;;;( Cowl panel microswitch (A) is built into the left cowl panel on the
vehicle. When the front roof panel guide pin has reached the cowl
panel, the microswitch is closed. Beginning at this position, the
electric motor is activated and the roof sections are locked.

Catch hook locking microswitch (B) is installed on the left below the
hardtop locking mechanism electric motor. The contacts of the
microswitch are opened if the catch hooks are locked. The catch
hooks lock both at the cowl panel and at the base plate in the
luggage compartment.

Catch hook unlocking microswitch (C) is installed on the right below

the hardtop locking mechanism electric motor. The contacts of the
microswitch are opened if the catch hooks on the cowl panel are
unlocked.

and right closure cylinders. When the closure is locked these
microswitches transmit a signal to the CTM .

Trunk lid closed Hall sensor (D) is installed on the right of the trunk
lid divider. When the trunk lid bow reaches the bottom position it

.;;;;{ Roof package Hall sensor (A) is installed on the right base plate in
the luggage compartment. When the guide pin of the front roof panel
has reached the guide in the base plate it transmits a signal to the
CTM.

Rear module open (B) I almost closed (C) Hall sensors detect rear
modu le piston movement. If the piston is extended , a signal is sent
from the top rear module open Hall sensor to the CTM. The lower
rear module almost closed Hall sensor sends a signal to the CTM
when the piston in the rear modu le cylinder is almost completely
extended.

Luggage compartment Hall sensor (D) signals that the luggage

compartment divider is in the bottom position . If this signal is
missing, the convertible top cannot be operated.

Roof package Hall sensor (E) is installed on the right rear pillar
cyl inder. when the piston in the rear pillar cylinder is extended it
sends a signal to the CTM .

Movement of the convertible top and rear module are determined by
corresponding valve positions and by reversing rotation direction of
the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump is driven by an electric

ROLLOVER PROTECTION SYSTEM

..:Oii( Two spring-loaded rollbar cassettes are mounted behind the rear
seat. The cassettes are bolted into the reinforced carrier behind the
seat backs.

A rollover control unit (ROC) , mounted in the rear behind the left rear
seat back on the rollbar cassette, contains the electronics for rollover
detection and deployment final stage for triggering the rollover bar
solenoids.

The ROC performs a self-check every time the ignition is switched

on . The ROC is connected to the restraint control module for
troubleshooting purposes.

If faults are detected, the warning lamp in the instrument cluster

lights up. In case of a crash, the system attempts to trigger the
rollover cassettes to deploy even if a fault code is stored in fault
memory.

BentleyPublishers NOTE-
COlT'
• Diagnosis of convertible top and Rollover Protection System are
beyond the scope of this book. Your authorized BMW dealer has
proper diagnostic equipment and tools to carry out these tasks.

After deployment, the detent pawl in a rollover protection cassette

can be retracted by press the toothed strap back so that roll bar can
be pushed down and locked into the solenoids.

WARNING-
• Ensure that area above and adjacent to rollover bars remains
clear and unobstructed at all times.

CAUTION-
• It is not possible to close convertible top with rollover bars
extended.
