DEFINITION

Debate is a matter of two or more sides

of the argument, whether individual or

and differences.
COMPETITIVE DEBATE
IN EDUCATION

Unlike actual debate in parliament, competitive debate is not intended

to produce decisions but is increasingly directed toward developing
certain abilities in its participants, such as the ability to present a
logical, clear and structured argument, listen to different arguments,
and the ability to speak in foreign languages.
International debate competitions mostly used
English as an introduction. No interpreter rescue
for any competitor. However, some competitions
gave special credit to teams coming from
countries that used English only as a second
language.
Australian Parliamentary / Australasian
Parliamentary ("Australs")
This style of debate is used in Australia, but its
effects spread to competitions held in Asia,
thus marking the end as the Australasian
geographical format.

In this format, two teams have three members of

each other across a debate, one team representing
the government and one team representing the
opposition.

The closing speech (reply speech) became a feature of

this format. The closing speech was given by the first
or second speaker from each team (not allowed for
the third speaker). The closing speech was started by
the opposition first, the new government.
British Parliamentary
This parliamentary debate is widely used in Britain but is also
popular in many countries, as it is the WUDC format. In this format,
four teams have members of each of the two individuals fighting in
one debate, two teams representing the government and the other
two opposition , in the following arrangement:

Opening Government vs Opening Opposition:

- Prime Minister - Leader of the Opposition- Deputy Prime
Minister - Deputy Leader of the Opposition
Closing Government vs Closing Opposition:
- Member of the Government - Member of the Opposition-
Government Whip - Opposition Whip
Asian Parliamentary (‘Asians”)
It is an advance from the Australs format and is used in
the Asian championships. The difference with the
Australs format is that the key of information may be
interrupted (points of information) that the 1st and 6th
minute intervals (only for the main speech, not at the
closing). This format is also similar to the world schools
style used at WSDC.
World Schools Debating
Championship (WSDC)
The format used in the World Schools Debating Championship
(WSDC) tournament can be considered a combination of BP and
Australasian. Each debate consists of two teams, called the
Proposition (affirmative) and the Opposition which have three
members each. The difference with BP and Austaralasian is that
the main speech is longer at 8 minutes and shorter in the closing
speech is 4 minutes.

The closing speech (reply speech) was delivered by the first or second
speaker of each team (not allowed to be a third speaker) and was
preceded by the Opposition and closed by the Proposition. While the
rules for interrupts (Points of Information - POI) are similar to the BP
format which can only be given between the 1st and 7th minute of the
main speech and no POI is allowed in the closing speech.
