ELECTROSTATICS
1. In an experiment three microscopic latex spheres are sprayed into a chamber and become
charged with charges +3e, +5e and -3e respectively. All the three spheres come in contact
simultaneously for a moment and got separated. Which one of the following are possible
values for the final charge on the sphere?
ANS : Total charge of all spheres before making
contact =+3e+5e−3e=+5e=+3e+5e−3e=+5e
So as per conservation of charge, total charge of all spheres after making contact
should be +5 e as well which is possible only in option (b).
Therefore, total charge =+6e+6e−7e−(+5e)=0
2. An object has net charge 1 C and gains 5.0 x 1018 electrons. The net charge on the object
becomes-
ANS:
Charge gained by object due to addition of
electrons =−(5×1018×1.6×10−19C)=−5×1018×1.6×10−19C
=−(8×10−1)=−0.8C=−8×10−1=−0.8C
So total net charge on object ==1C+(−0.8C)=+0.2C
3. Which of the following diagrams correctly represents the electric field between two charged
plates if a neutral conductor is placed in between the plates?
ANS :
Neutral conductor will induce +ve and -ve charges on its
surface as shown in figure above due to charges on plates.
Now electric field lines from +ve plate will initiate normally and it emerges normally
on -ve plate (surface of conductor)
4. The magnitude of electric field due to a point charge 2q, at a distance r is E. Then the
magnitude of the electric field due to a uniformly charged thin spherical shell of radius R with
total charge q at distance r/2 (r >> R) will be
ANS:
E=14πε0⋅2qr2E=14πε0⋅2qr2
Now, if a charged thin spherical shell is considered, electric field outside of shell will
be such that entire charge on shell is concentrated at its centre i.e. we can replace
charged shell with point charge kept at location of centre of shell so:
E'=1/4πε0q/(r/
2)^2 =1/4πε04q/r2=2⋅1/4πε02q/r2=2E
5. A square sheet of side „a‟ is lying parallel to XY plane at z = a. The electric field in the region is
E = CZ^2K⃗⃗⃗. The electric flux through the sheet is
ANS:
Area vector for this square sheet, A⃗ =(a2)kA→=a2k
Electric field at square sheet at (z=a),E⃗ =c(a)2k(z=a),E→=c(a)2k
Electric flux through the sheet ϕ=E⃗ ⋅A⃗ =(a2k)⋅(ca2k)=ca4(k⋅k)=ca4
6. Let repulsive force on q0 due to q be F→F→ and attractive force on q0 due to -q
be F2−→F2→
Now,
F1=14πε0q0⋅qa2 and F2=14πε0q0qa2F1=1/4πε0q0⋅qa2 and F2=14πε0q0qa2
So magnitude of resultant force FR=F21+F22−−−−−−√FR=F12+F22
=(14πε0q0⋅qa2)2+(14πε0q0⋅qa2)2−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−
−√=14πε0q0⋅qa22–√
