LESSON 1: AN INTRODUCTION TO SPORTS
Sport means all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organized participation, aim at expressing or
improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships, or obtaining results in competition at all
levels.
Types of Sports:
1. Individual Sports involve one participant on each competing side. Therefore, it requires self-motivation,
discipline, self-accountability, and self-confidence to play the game. Success and failure depend on the individual.
2. Dual Sports involve two or with one pair on each competing side. Hence, winning or losing the game is
dependent on the pair and not on a particular individual.
3. Team Sports involve more than two players on each competing side. Many variables dictate the success or failure
of the group. These variables are the qualities and skills of each participant, along with mutual understanding,
coordination, and collective effort of all the team members.
The table below shows examples of sports according to their types.

locomotors, non-locomotors, and manipulative are needed for sports participation.

 Running
 Hopping

Technical and Tactical Skills Involved in Sports

 Technical Skills in Sports

Examples: mastering the dribbling, passing, and shooting techniques in basketball, ball serving, passing,
setting, reception, blocking, attacking or spiking, digging in volleyball, and performing special tests splinting in
athletics.
 Tactical Skills in Sports
In sports language, tactical skills are also known as game sense.
Examples: quick passing and movement with the ball against a taller but slower opponent in basketball.
Always Play Safe
It is important that in playing any sport, keeping oneself safe is the first thing to consider in order to prevent accidents and
other injuries.
SAFETY REMINDERS

 Check the materials or equipment to be used before the game proper.

 Perform a proper warm-up activity.
 Secure the safety of the venue or place where you are going to conduct the sports activity.
 Strictly followed the rules, standards, and other regulations of the game.
 Use the technique properly and have skill analysis for improvement.
 Ask a professional or skilled individual to help you to improve your sports skills.

Other aspects to consider in learning sports:

1. History of sports: The information about the inventor of the sport, year of invention, the country where the sport
originated, and how the game has developed through the years.
2. Court dimensions or Venue: It is the place where the games are played. It can be indoor, outdoor, or both. The size
varies; there are different designs for males or females, including information about safety protocols and procedures for
the players.
3. Equipment and gear involved: It is the use of proper protective gear like helmets, uniforms, and outfits, and the tools
required to play the game like basketball or net. These provide safety for the players and officials and prevent injuries.
4. Technical and Tactical Skills: These skills are the basic skills required to play games that reach advanced and higher
levels through practice. Such skills include dribble, shoot, and pass in basketball. Tactical skills are applying technical
skills, development of game sense, and usage of strategies to take advantage of the opponent's weakness during the game.
An example of such skills involves quick pass and movement against a taller but slower opponent.
5. Rules of the Game: Every game has a different set of rules or guidelines and honor codes that a player must follow.
Failure to follow such laws leads to violations and penalties. The game rules also include playing a game, scoring points,
information about the number of players allowed, and duration.
6. Officiating: The game officials are responsible for calling out violations, penalties, break, and points to ensure fair play
and maintain discipline in the game.
